Lambert's 'Trespassing' is fierce and flashy

'Trespassing'
Adam Lambert
RCA
**** (four out of five stars)
Blame Adam Lambert for the loss of "American Idol" shimmer (and glitter) in recent years.
Since Lambert finished second - still hard to believe - to Kris Allen in 2009, the show just hasn't been the same.
No one since has brought his mix of polished talent, over-the-top theatricality and pop fabulousness to the stage. (The jury's still out on current contenders Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet, whose potential will soon be tested on post-show albums.)
"For Your Entertainment," Lambert's 2009 debut, did a good job of channeling his flashy persona into big, bracing pop songs. "Trespassing," online and in stores Tuesday, builds on that framework with bigger anthems, bolder colors and a nod to the current musical climate.
This is fierce, fun dance music, lifted high into the heavens by Lambert's supernatural range - and expert help from Pharrell Williams, Dr. Luke, Nile Rodgers, Sam Sparro, Bruno Mars and Lester Mendez.
The title track sets a seductive, swaggering tone and rides a bassline reminiscent of a Queen anthem with a hint of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl." ("Make their faces crack," Lambert quips.) It's likely no coincidence. Lambert is set to front several Queen performances in Russia and Europe.
The album's first half is a beat-per-minute celebration, all sex and clubs and smoky disco haze.
"Shady" boasts just a touch of the Beatles' "Come Together" amid the clubland glitter, and "Kickin' In" serves up blocky beats reminiscent of Madonna's "Hard Candy" and diva-worthy wails. (Not a bad thing, by the way.)
Current single "Never Close Our Eyes" riffs on Coldplay's "Clocks" amid sliding electro riffs. It's a much stronger representation of the album than Pink-esque first single "Better Than I Know Myself," which did little to distinguish Lambert's musical persona.
The best stuff here positions him as a smarter, sassier male equivalent to the likes of Rihanna and Katy Perry. More Kylie Minogue, less Ke$ha and no David Guetta remix necessary.
Tag the ridiculously catchy "Naked Love" as a future single, thanks to Lambert's lighthearted delivery and a series of "whoa-oh-ohs" destined for singalongs. It's a bright-and-shiny ode to stripping down to basics (figuratively and literally speaking).
Stormy ballads populate the album's final few stretches and, of course, highlight Lambert's searing vocals. The sinewy, push-pull dynamic of "Broken English" is an ode to Lambert's boyfriend, Finnish reality star Sauli Koskinen. And there's nothing like hearing him wrap his range around the angsty lyrics of "Underneath."
"Outlaws of Love" is the album's emotional centerpiece, a moody call for equality that finds Lambert exercising a bit of vocal restraint. It makes the message - "They say we'll rot in hell/But I don't think we will/They've branded us enough" - all the more powerful.
There's a lot going on throughout "Trespassing," but it's to Lambert's credit that he never drowns in excess. He's a capable enough singer to not only keep his head above water but also to make almost every moment soar.
Just follow the glitter trail in the sky.

Album Review: Adam Lambert's continuing evolution on 'Trespassing'
The former 'American Idol' runner-up has a lot to say on sophomore set
HitFix By Melinda Newman Monday, May 14, 2012 5:36 PM
Critics Rating A- Fan Rating A
Adam Lambert’s sophomore major label set, “Trespassing” opens with a full blast of bravado. “Wait til you get a load of me!,” the American Idol season eight runner up declares over and over on the thumping, hand-clapping tune, redolent of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” crossed with Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”
Ready or not, Lambert is kicking down the door. He’s not just coming in, he’s claiming a seat at the head of the table and you will be served. The 15-track set is awash in Lambert’s influences: the aforementioned Queen and Michael Jackson, as well as Scissor Sisters, George Michael, and, even, Parliament. To his credit, while he wears these inspirations with obvious homage, he still creates his own document here with his own history overriding those of any of his musical touchstones.
Every so often an artist makes an album that brims over with not so much confidence as the feeling that he has left absolutely nothing on the studio floor. “Trespassing” is one of those efforts. It feels like every bit of Lambert’s heart, soul, ambition and sweat went into its creation. Such efforts can be a mess of too much of everything, and restraint has never been Lambert’s strong suit, but his tendency toward excess serves him well here.
As he’s often discussed in interviews, including Lambert's chat with Hitfix, the album moves from the light to the dark, taking the listener on a journey through Lambert’s head beat by beat: The first half is all throb and pent-up sexual energy in search of some kind of release, whether it’s the communal (in the Bruno Mars-penned “Never Close Our Eyes,” one of the album’s strongest tracks) or “Kickin’ In,” which any fan of George Michael’s will instantly take you back to his early ‘90s heyday (a “Father Figure”-era Michael is also recalled on “Broken English” later on).
Though Lambert himself has suggested there’s a bi-polar nature to the album, the one constant thread is the hunger and unquenchable desire to reveal one’s true self and to allow those you want to get to know better to strip down both emotionally and physically, as on “Naked Love.”
Track 8 (and first single) “Better Than I Know Myself” is the midway point and the transition from the dance party to the reflective, often somber second half. If the first half plays it all with a false confidence, the last several songs are full of enough confessions, and admissions to fill years of therapy.
“Underneath” is the album’s musical heart. On the ambient, atmospheric track, Lambert peels back all the layers we all keep hidden, and shows someone his true self to his lover. He stands, emotionally naked and raw, “Look at me, now do you see, underneath, underneath.” It’s Lambert at his most vulnerable., showing his “red river of screams,” and all his sins. It’s exhausting to listen to in part because it sounds like it takes so much out of Lambert to strip down so far, but it’s also cathartic.
Throughout, Lambert, who co-wrote 12 of the songs here and worked with a raft of producers, is self-assured vocally in a way that is leaps ahead of 2009’s “For Your Entertainment.” Lambert has the potential to be a premier rock howler: his voice can peel the paint off the wall; but he also knows when to rein it in, such as on the sad (all the more so after North Carolina’s passage of Amendment One) “Outlaws Of Love,” which is about gay marriage. “They say we’ll rot in hell/Well, I don’t think we will/They’ve branded us enough/Outlaws of love”).
By the end of the album, Lambert is looking for some safe place to “lay down” his partner. Small wonder, everyone has to be exhausted by this point...the listener, Lambert, and anyone he’s brought this far along with him. The album could use a good editor: I would have left off both “Pop That Lock” and “Runnin’,” though I know even as I write this someone will no doubt say those are his/her favorite songs.
“Trespassing” shows tremendous evolution in Lambert as an artist who has something to say and he continues to figure out the best ways and the best partners to bring along in that exploration. Not every song resonates or hits it mark, but there’s not a lot more than you can ask of an artist than to travel the path that Lambert is clearly on.

The Evolution of Adam Lambert
From "American Idol" season 8 hopeful to the belle of the glitter-pop ball, THR traces the evolution of the glam rocker whose highly anticipated album "Trespassing" is out this week.
4:07 PM PDT 5/14/2012 by Portia Medina
Since season 8 of American Idol kicked off, we have watched the Indianapolis-born, San Diego-raised Adam Lambert blossom from caterpillar to butterfly right before America's eyes.
From his earliest moments on the stage, when long-sleeved flannel shirts and jeans were the height of Idol fashion, to the glammed-up leather and studs finale number that had jaws dropping, Lambert has always looked good, no matter what the effort.
But it was on Idol's live shows that the then 27-year-old truly wowed with a keen sense of theatrics that made his performances tune-in musts. Since coming in second to Kris Allen, the rocker has been able to spread his wings far beyond continential border, touring internationally with his Glam Nation trek in 2010 and collaborating with the iconic British band Queen.
With the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album Trespassing on May 15, Lambert is yet again poised to make a splash.
Check out the THR gallery to see Lambert's evolution in pictures from Idol Top 36 contestant to bona fide star.

Adam Lambert braces for whirlwind with 'Trespassing,' Queen tour
With his sophomore album 'Trespassing' just landing and a summer tour with Queen in the works, Adam Lambert basks in his 'somewhat' normal life.
By Mikael Wood, Special to the Los Angeles Times
May 15, 2012
Adam Lambert is arguably the last major star to come out of the "American Idol" franchise. Though the spectacle-prone singer finished second in 2009 behind the bland pop-rock softie Kris Allen, he attained a near-Kelly Clarkson level of renown thanks to his arresting presence on the show, and for coming out as a gay man weeks after the eighth-season finale.
Lambert will leave himself open again for public scrutiny in July when he fills in for one of his primary influences, the late Freddie Mercury, during five European concerts with Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen. Lambert first joined the English group's remaining members on "Idol."
"It's a daunting task," he said over lunch last month at a Larchmont Boulevard vegan joint. "But I'm looking forward to it. And I feel total faith from them."
The singer admits that he's "started smelling a little bit of doubt" on the part of Queen fans skeptical about Mercury's being replaced. But he insists that's not the case.
"There will only be one Freddie Mercury. I'm not trying to imitate him. I'm not trying to outdo him. I'm just trying to sing great music that he wrote. It's not that deep." He laughs. "Although, yes, it is that deep, because it's Queen! It means a lot to me personally."
As with Mercury, Lambert's outré wardrobe, slinky stage moves and skyscraping vocals combined to create the image of a natural star. A-list hitmakers such as Dr. Luke and Linda Perry lined up to be part of his debut album, but 2009's "For Your Entertainment" only sold 838,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan — a relatively modest commercial success that seemed out of proportion with the huge following Lambert cultivated on TV.
So earlier this year, with a new record in the works, Lambert dedicated himself to an undertaking he didn't have time for in the wake of "Idol" — spending a month visiting radio stations across the United States in the hopes of selling program directors on his latest single.
"The challenge is satisfying the 'You were in America's living room' thing while still progressing," the 30-year-old mused between bites of shredded kale. "And I think this album does it."
He might be right: On "Trespassing," due out Tuesday from RCA Records, Lambert moves away from the guitar-heavy "For Your Entertainment" (which he called "my version of glam rock") toward a sleeker electro-disco sound in keeping with dance music's takeover of mainstream pop.
Some of those A-list hitmakers appear again, along with new collaborators such as Pharrell Williams and Chic's Nile Rodgers. But Lambert co-wrote nine of the dozen songs — including "Outlaws of Love," a moody ballad about the fight for gay marriage — and the result feels more personal even as it zeros in on radio's sweet spot.
"If you cut these songs open, you get Adam," says Williams, whose credits on "Trespassing" include the hard-thumping title track, in which Lambert insists, "I don't need no GPS to show me where to go." "It's his personality, his story, his DNA."
"Adam had a hand in every word," adds Bonnie McKee, who co-wrote the uptempo party song "Cuckoo" and the more sensual "Chokehold." As one of Lambert's vocal producers, McKee also oversaw his singing in the studio.
"When you write a pop song there's a formula where by the end you're doing these crazy ad libs," she says. "But Adam was like, 'I don't wanna do that this time.' He wants to show a different side."
Lambert, who grew up in San Diego and performed in a touring production of "Wicked" before auditioning for "American Idol," attributes the album's lived-in vibe to the circumstances surrounding its creation.
"All I had on my plate was working on my music. It felt so good," he says. "The last album I made while I was on the road and I was just adjusting to all this." He remembers struggling to dial down the competitive mind set "Idol" requires and learning how to navigate the imposed intimacy of his interaction with fans.
"Now I'm renting a house and I'm in a relationship," he says. "I'm living somewhat of a normal life."
Or at least he was. With "Trespassing" in stores, Lambert's existence is again taking a turn for the extraordinary, as he launches a campaign RCA Vice President of marketing Nick Pirovano claims will stretch well into 2013. "We know this album has several singles," Pirovano says, adding, "We want a No. 1 album, and we feel good about the setup."
The first of those singles, an atmospheric ballad called "Better Than I Know Myself," stalled out at No. 76 on Billboard's Hot 100. But Lambert performed its higher-energy follow-up, "Never Close Our Eyes," Monday on"Good Morning America"; he'll do the song again Thursday night on "Idol."
Asked whether the preparations for his forthcoming performances with Queen have meant more work on top of his "Trespassing" duties, Lambert nods vigorously. "There was definitely a moment of, like, 'Whoa, this is a lot,'" he says. "But these are the things that make us better artists. I think I'm gonna grow and learn a lot. I mean, being onstage with rock legends? It's pretty awesome."
