The Power of Pop
5/27/2012 by NoAngel
One of the album's biggest contributions is that it's not just an accomplished collection of songs, but that it showcases the power and versatility of pop music. Yes, pop music can be fun, and yes, it can be highly stylized, but behind its glossy facade, pop music can also capture powerful emotions that people far and wide can relate to with great ease and apply to their own world of experience…. Lambert perfectly understands the power of pop and uses the ever-evolving genre to his full advantage. ~ArjanWrites
Source: www.arjanwrites.com/arjanwrites/2012/05/adam-lambert-trespassing.html
Let's face it—pop music gets a bad rap. Inherently commercial, it is music designed for the masses and is generally seen as less valid, less artistic, less meaningful than other genres. By definition pop music is meant to be popular, and as in any art that which is popular is maligned by both critics and connoisseurs.
While there are plenty of Adam fans who love pop music, there are also many who much prefer other genres and love Adam's music despite his chosen genre rather than because of it. This mindset gets no judgment from me. I'm the world's most awful snob when it comes to books, and my friends know better than to recommend a popular novel to me if they want to avoid a ranty rant about pop lit.
However, pop music, when at its best, has value beyond the sum of its manufactured parts. And for Adam, as Arjan implies, it is possibly the most perfect genre with which he can share his message.
By the most basic definition, pop music is meant to appeal to the masses. The emphasis is on rhythm, catchy hooks, and simple repetitive lyrics. Pop music makes you want to dance and there is something very primal about that. Humans have been coming together to move in unison to a pulsing rhythm long before there was anyone around to write snobby music reviews about it. Dancing together to repetitive beats unites us not only to our ancestors but to those who share the modern dance floor. While we sweat and sway to the music, we find ourselves dancing next to people who may be nothing like us on the surface but who are very much the same once we look past their labels. And isn't that exactly Adam's message? That we all love the same, we all cry the same, we all feel the same… underneath.
Pop music is about a shared experience. It is trendy and current and accessible. Everyone is welcome and no one need feel left out. You roll down the windows and blast the radio and laugh because the person in the car next to you has the same song blasting. You hum the earwormy lyrics from the song that's stuck in your head and your coworker finishes the melody. As humans, one of our most basic urges is to feel connected, and pop music connects us. It crosses lines of class and race and nationality. You don't need to analyze it or feel left out because you don’t 'get it.' While other genres may seek to carve out niches and cliques, pop music is about inclusivity. It's about partying together.
At the same time, pop music can affect change in significant ways. While the meme of pop music as meaningless pap has some truth to it, it is undeniable that pop artists have pushed musical and societal boundaries under the guise of entertainment. Michael Jackson broke down racial barriers with his music videos on MTV and his enormous popularity paved the way for other African-American artists. Madonna pushed the envelope in terms of success for a female recording artist and helped redefine female sexual expression both onstage and off. And now Adam's achievement as the first openly gay recording artist to top the Billboard chart is yet another example of a pop artist trespassing all over social boundaries.
While Adam's voice and talents would certainly shine brightly in other genres, pop suits his personality and philosophy quite perfectly. He doesn't want to draw lines, he wants to draw us together. For the duration of a song you are united with everyone else who is listening, and maybe (shhhh, don't tell) we can break down some walls while we're at it.
So turn it up, turn it up, turn it way up, and let's dance! Trespassing is more fun when we do it together

A Quantum Leap
5.27.12 by Q3
Friday night, the glitterati and denizens of Adam fandom gathered for a concert in a small city in Northeast PA. They came from California and Washington, Florida, Maine and Japan – and seemingly every place in-between. Plus there were also some fans from NE PA. I am so pleased that I decided to return to Wilkes Barre to see this show.
--
Adam has always been an amazing performer. He knows how to rule the stage and command the audience. But the artist who took the stage Friday night in Wilkes-Barre, PA was transformed.
He was confident.
He was supremely happy.
He was gorgeous.
He was Adam Lambert at a whole new level.
Even the beginning of the concert was unusual and yet right.
--
The band was on stage. Some DJ’s I did not know were talking.
Almost simultaneously there was a murmur in the crowd “Adam” and I saw a man in a black and white striped top standing at stage right. ADAM! Everything stopped. Brian stated playing Trespassing. Adam walked to center stage singing Trespassing.
For the next 48 minutes I watched an artist perform at a new, higher level. There was no way to make anything better. (Except, well if he performed 15 more songs.)
--
I am certain that you all know the playlist. You have seen the videos. You probably know more than I do about this concert. I probably think you know everything about this concert but unless you were there, there is no way you can know.
This was an Adam concert filled with power, energy and excitement. It was almost wall-to-wall dance music. But it was a concert done by an artist who was so supremely self-confident – in front of an audience filled with fans.
This concert was a “quantum leap” forward for Adam. He was so confident, the schtick was more playful, the intros to songs were loose, the songs were great, the vocals were breathtaking and yet easy. It was a performance by an artist who had nothing to prove.
--
The band is so much more in sync with Adam and his music. Brian and Adam seem to have a shared vision for what this music should sound like. So the tension between pop and rock music that was a subtle yet pervasive undercurrent throughout the Glamnation Tour was not evident.
--
The songs. The songs. I cannot say enough about these songs. They are great on the record but they are supreme live. They give Adam room to be playful, to dance and to celebrate. The entire experience is foy-filled.
--
Maybe in a day or two I will figure out a way to express this concert experience fully. I doubt it. So let me give you one piece of advice. IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO SEE ADAM LIVE AT ONE OF THESE PRE-TOUR CONCERTS, GO. JUST, GO. Note: I am not referring to the mega-radio concerts with 18 performers in an arena and 5 songs by Adam. I am referring to these Adam Lambert headline events that are mixed in.
--
The Threat of BEACHWEAR!!
I believe that Adam’s comment about next summer’s tour being involving beachwear was inspired by Friday night’s opening act, Neon Hitch. The most notable thing about her performance was that she performed in what looked like a silver bikini, a large flower spray, and very high red shoes which she could not drive. When Adam said it, however, all I could think about was AQUA BOARD SHORTS!!! Urgh! It was the only small bit of negativity that entered my mind during the entire concert.

Adam Lambert energizes Six Flags New England crowd
The new 20-story tall roller coaster at Six Flags New England was not the only Goliath at the amusement park on Saturday. A 6-foot, 1-inch tall pop star with the biggest album in the country proved to be a big Memorial Day weekend attraction.
Adam Lambert’s appearance at Six Flags was in support of his sophomore studio album, “Trespassing,” which debuted this week in the No.1 spot on the charts.
