Adam opened the door in 2009. His Ama performance forced some looks at some double standards in 2009. He was a trallblazer for the music industry in 09. He was the birth of a new kinda star. A star Sam Smith has become. But imo if Adam never came along, I have doubts US music would embrace Sam as easily as they have. Unfortunately Adams contributions get overlooked.

Yeah Adam's contributions do get overlooked and it freakin' upsets me. Sam Smith = safe gay. AFL = out of the box...edgy, challenging, and thought-provoking gay. That's all I'm going to say.

Look in the long run the world or the US doesent need another Michael Buble, Josh Grobin, or Sam Smith. They need a guy like Adam Lambert. Over the top, edgy, polarizing, and owns it. He challenges people. Alot of people find him threatning, Sam is perfect for mainstream media. He is safe. Adams time well come.

So much has happened since Adam's American Idol appearance.. Major advances in Gay rights, marriage equality, and the coming out of LGBTQ folks in music, athletics, politics and the business world.. Adam was at the forefront and a catalyst for change... Sam comes in at a very good time for gay artists, plus he is very successful in his own country.Adam opened the door here in America and Sam walked through it I like Sam and he has had a great year, kind of like an Adele year.. His success and Adam's success will hopefully help gay artists get signed by record companies. I have to admit I do get a little heart pain when Adam doesn't get all the recognition I think he deserves, but when I go back 5 years or less...Adam might not have gotten all the award stuff ,but my goodness ,he has had so many interviews.. He had two videos made of his life .Magazine covers galore. He was one of Barbara's top ten, a Grammy nod.. and so forth.. As a new star, I call that initial recogniton of the highest order .Now just look at him.. world wide recognition with Queen. To add, Adam seems to revisit all the places that didn't recognize him the first time.. I.e. tried out for Queen road show, Glee, etc. He always comes back WINNING. If Grammy and AMA awards are the symbols of fame and recognition... IMHO Adam will be back to win them both..Sigh,Well I've made myself feel a little better..LOL

Adam mention
Adam Lambert, for one, questioned all the cock-teasing. “Anyone find it interesting how straight male Pop stars r pandering to gay audiences lately!? Should we be flattered? Progress or strategy?”
They talk about Sam Smith and say:
"But America, and the world, was ready for its first openly gay pop superstar: “All I can say is I’m so unbelievably surprised and happy at how far the world has come,” Smith confessed, “because there have been no issues.”
Really? They're saying Sam Smith is America's " first openly gay pop superstar"?! Sorry I beg to differ...AFL is the first openly gay pop SUPERSTAR! IMHO
Seriously? Neither Adam or Sam were first -- you kind of have to add in 21st century since I think Elton John might be on a superstar list. JMHO -- no rocks -- I think neither Adam or Sam are superstars yet. Sam has had a great year, but to me "superstar" required having lasting power. And Adam is a star but not yet a superstar. A3 + Queen could do it.

But I don't think Sam Smith is any kind of "new" star. He's got nice clean clear vocals like Adele but he's much more Boy George than Adam so I just don't see it as new. Here is an article from Gawker about his gayness. gawker.com/sam-smiths-fucked-up-gay-conservatism-1624526763 Now keep in mind that Gawker has never cared much for Adam either and also that there is a big 10 year gap between Sam and Adam's age. Adam of 5 years ago is a closer match for Sam of now. Also his music videos are not what I would expect, they don't explore any counterculture or introspection. Sam is not what Adam will become. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCkpzqqog4k

A3 + Queen could do it. Well yes of course Elton would be considered the very "first". I just think in the 70's-80's you could argue the subject of alternative sexuality in music particularly was a taboo subject. By 2009 society was becoming alot more open minded. So I think America and Mainstream Music were waiting for someone like Adam for a very long time. So he was the leader of a big shift of change in 2009. A trailblazer some what. Techniquely Adam has had staying power, it has been 5 years and he is still around haha. Adam was also considered the first openly gay artist to be launched on a major recording label. Adam was always going to be a superstar, he has true talent, true talent always rises to the top.

There was a very big difference between the 70's and the 80's at least in the US -- no one cared that much in the 70's but thing became very conservative in the late 70's until the late 2000's. I am not sure that America was ready for Adam in 2009, but it is now. A lot has changed since 2009 -- and Adam is part of that story. And, of course, Adam is the first openly gay artist to be successfully launched on a major recording label. The first openly gay major label artist is Jobraith (two albums 1973 and 1974 on Electra/Warners Communications -- Warners Music Group today) but that was a tragic failure.

Sam Smith is being recognized for creating one of the top 10 selling albums in the world this year, for writing some amazing songs. And that is well deserved. Adam has not put out and album for 2-1/2 years -- and once he releases A3, he will hopefully get a lot of recognition for his music. But right now there is no new music for people to hear, buy or give awards for. In the meantime, he is getting worldwide recognition as a great vocalist and performer because of Queen and to a lesser extent Glee.
