Personally won't give the article hits, but I would imagine that most of his fan base agrees with him.

I wasn't a fan to begin with. He is boring as hell. Yeah, I mean no disrespect, but I could not get through listening to one of his songs. He's just not my 'cup of tea'.

I'm done with him.. He shows no compassion for talented folks who have to work very hard to get recognized.. Was I ever a big fan .. No but now he's another Justin Beiber to me..LOL

I didn't read it that Sam was so much putting down singers for going on reality shows. He is probably right that it is not an effective way to promote one's song writing abilities. As for Adam on Idol, he IS a singer who wanted to show what he could do vocally. He DID sing on cruise ships. He DID do years of musical theater, which, I guess one could say, was singing cover music, in a way. At age eighteen, he said that no matter the part, no matter the stage, no matter the location, if only he could sing for the rest of his life, he would be happy. So, using reality TV to get people to listen to him and know what he was capable of was an excellent strategy. Two guys from the UK heard him and hired him to sign with them, after all. What ticks me off is the implied message that singers who do not write their own music are somehow inferior to or lesser than those who do. Coming from a classical background, I just do not get that attitude. Most classical musicians are NOT composers, and do not strive to be. There is so much incredible music already written. Dedicating one's professional life to performing Beethoven or Chopin or Stravinsky does not mean one is less worthy. Singing Handel's Messiah is not "selling out" to please the rabble. A vast majority of the pop songs written today will be utterly forgotten in five or ten years. The classics, be they classical, jazz, musical theater, or rock, are classics because they are rare, inspired, interesting, and beloved over time. People love to hear them again and again. People love to hear them "covered." Especially by exceptionally talented singers and musicians like Adam.

The road to success is very difficult and individuals such as Adam understand you cannot go around biting the hand that you want to feed you, especially fans, record companies, and the producers/companies behind those singing shows. Dear Sam, I hope someday when you are standing on a street corner singing the music of other people for spare change, you will have a greater appreciation for the classics and the music industry. It is not that forgiving and to me you sound like a bawling cow out in a field. As always, everyone has the right to express their opinion. Thank you.

Boy what would Sam say about Avicii.. he interprets music as a DJ,neither writes it or sings it.. People have different talents... Sam Smith needs to grow up. OK I'm done now...

I guess we see things much differently. He's not dissing all talent shows and I don't see the arrogance. He thinks the shows are not a good idea for someone who is a songwriter. From the article: I like listening to he sing but haven't purchased any of his music.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the top ten songs from five years ago. How many of them are great songs you hear covered frequently five years later?
1 Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow
2 Lady Gaga Poker Face
3 Lady Gaga feat. Colby O'Donis Just Dance
4 Black Eyed Peas I Gotta Feeling
5 Taylor Swift Love Story
6 Flo Rida Right Round
7 Jason Mraz I'm Yours
8 Beyonce Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)
9 Kanye West Heartless
10 All-American Rejects Gives You Hell
At least, I heard of about half of them. Looking back ten years ago, we have
1 Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris Yeah!
2 Usher Burn
3 Alicia Keys If I Ain't Got You
4 Maroon 5 This Love
5 OutKast feat. Sleepy Brown The Way You Move
6 Hoobastank The Reason
7 Mario Winans feat. Enya and P. Diddy I Don't Wanna Know
8 OutKast Hey Ya!
9 Ciara feat. Petey Pablo Goodies
10 Terror Squad Lean Back
Not exactly memorable, are they? I would say that writing a hit pop song is a talent, all right. But not necessarily a talent for writing great music.
