Somehow I seem to remember that Adam's friends nicknamed him 'Mary' many years back. * While Adam does not see himself in any female persona, not even for stage/presentation purposes ('I don't do drag'), as compared to i.e somebody like Sutan/Raja, who I presume, has a much stronger sense of a female half, he still had that name. But with Adam, the 'Mary' was always just the typical out and proud gay guys calling each other with female names, exactly because by being out, they are free to do so. It was not about an inherent female persona, for Adam.
I always found it quite interesting, that it was important to Adam to make this difference clear to us fans. And he did so early on.
But the name Mary is associated with himself for those in the know. These would be great lyrics, personal on one level known to insiders, yet with the strong musical reference to Tina Turner for the music world at large, and then for the public the general topic to just be proud and continue on the path you are on.... LOOOOVE this piece of lyrics already(and I presume that those are lyrics).
================
* ETA: Corrected later by others. Mary was just used in general terms, not specifically for Adam. But the name Madam existed for him.

OH! Yeah! Here are the song's lyrics. "Proud Mary"
Left a good job in the city Workin' for the Man every night and day But I never lost a minute of sleepin' Worryin' 'bout the way things might have been [chorus] Big wheel keep on turnin' Proud Mary keep on burnin'Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis Pumped a lot of tane down in New Orleans But I never saw the good side of a city 'Til I hitched a ride on the riverboat queen [repeat chorus] If you come down to the River Bet you're gonna find some people who live You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money People on the river are happy to give [repeat chorus]

I wonder what nickname he would have given Adam (if not "Mary")?

Thinking about the new album and possible tour and having listened to QAL you tubes more than a few times, I'm going to miss not only the great musicianship of the Queen crew, but their exquisite harmonizing/harmonies. It is so perfect and perfectly placed to highlight Adam's voice and the music, it is easy to take the harmony back-up for granted among the other brilliant qualities of this tour. It totally provides a beautiful backdrop for Adam without getting in the way. The perfect harmony backup allows Adam to do riffs off the melody line in a more improvisational way. Just wanted to call this to people's attention if you can tear yourself away from Adam and Brian's sublime guitar. I'm not saying this very well, perhaps dear Cassie can weigh in. You said it perfectly. I have always been impressed with the quality of those close harmonies. Very difficult to do. One thing less that Adam has to worry about, because Spike has them whipped into shape!

I am not the expert on gay culture, but when I have worked with gay guys in performance, they often call each other "Mary." I don't think it is something friends specifically named Adam.
