Probably everyone is done with the AI stress issue, but I just got home and would like to add my two cents. Some people have already mentioned what I would have added to my original comment this morning.
There is a double whammy for these kids: waiting and finding out if you have made it through to the next level AND performing for millions of people all within a short period. I can't think of any other situation where contestants are waiting to find out their fate (BIG jolt of adrenaline) and about 1 1/2 minutes later are required to perform their next song to get to the next level (another BIG jolt of adrenaline).
I think it is reasonable to prepare yourself for a big audition/performance and learn to deal with the stress. Previously, AI finalists had a week to prepare and adjust their emotions, etc. I can't imagine any seasoned performer wanting to do what these kids (and many of them are teenagers) are being asked to do.
This is very different from making a speech or regular auditioning. You have lead time and can mentally prepare for the nerves without the added stress of doing it with a double dose of adrenaline. Everyone knows adrenaline can really mess with you, and I think that AI could be shooting itself in the foot by making the contestants do this. I should think the show would want to show their contestants in the best light.
Think of how many very experienced Grammy or Oscar winners get up at the awards show and babble incoherently. The excitement can be overwhelming. Then ask them to perform for their life?!?!
