Note: I have blatantly plagiarized large portions of this post. I was inspired to do it. It is an homage.
“Copyright infringement as it applies to songwriting plagiarism goes beyond merely how a song sounds, and if a songwriter even intended to copy the work of another. The field has become more and more litigious in recent decades, and to an outsider, the situation can look a bit creatively limiting.”

Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke Vs Marvin Gaye
youtu.be/ziz9HW2ZmmY
“Blurred Lines” is the most recent case of a big hit plagiarism case but there are so many more.
Generally it is not a good idea to leave a paper trail leading right back to the song you supposedly plagiarized. And in the case of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” vs. Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up,” Thicke had done multiple interviews name-checking Gaye as inspiration for his No. 1 hit. He told GQ, for example, “One of my favorite songs of all time was Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got to Give It Up.’ I was like, ‘Damn, we should make something like that, something with that groove.’ Then he started playing a little something and we literally wrote the song in about a half hour and recorded it. The whole thing was done in a couple hours.”
There was another recent claim that the chorus of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” sounded a lot like Tom Petty’s 1989 hit “Won’t Back Down”. There result was a 12.5 percent songwriting credit awarded to Petty and his co-writer, Jeff Lynne.
Sometimes it is pretty clear that a song was lifted. For example “Under Pressure” and “Ice Baby”. "Ice Ice Baby" was the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts. The song interpolates the bassline of "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie, who did not initially receive songwriting credit or royalties until after it had become a hit.
Since this was settled, fans have created countless mash-ups of these two great tracks. Here’s one:
Vanilla Queen - Ice Under Pressure

Sometimes it is a thin line between ripping off or uncredited sampling and inspiration. John Deacon said his baseline in "Another One Bites the Dust” was inspired by the song "Good Times" by Chic. You be the judge.
Here is a mash-up of Good Times by Chic from their album Risqué (1979) with Another One Bites The Dust by Queen from the album The Game (1980).

Muddy Waters - You Need Love (Composed by Willie Dixon)

This is a case where the lyrics, riff, hook and melody were ripped off. This one was settled years ago.
Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" vs. Taurus "Spirit"
Led Zeppelin might be the world leader in song ripoffs. They have settled a lot of these claims but a big one is headed towards a court date. Who really wrote the intro to “Stairway to Heaven”? The claim is that LZ lifted the intro for their famous "Stairway to Heaven" from fellow rock band Spirit's song "Taurus," released three years prior. (And this is a cause were they toured together .)

“Viva la Ripoff”?
Coldplay scored their first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008 with "Viva la Vida," attracting the attention of guitarist Joe Satriani, who claimed it copied parts of his 2004 instrumental track "If I Could Fly." The band called it a coincidence but settled out of court with him in 2009.

Meghan Trainor "All About That Bass" vs. Koyote's "Happy Mode"
Did Meghan Trainor lifted the melody from a 2006 song called "Happy Mode" by the Korean pop band Koyote. Lawyers are looking into this one.

Maybe Rod Stewart wasn’t so sexy after all?
"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" is arguably Rod Stewart's most recognized song, so it's a shame he borrowed a pretty significant part of it from someone musician Jorge Ben's 1976 song "Taj Mahal." Stewart admitted the hook was the same, although he asserted it was simply a matter of "unconscious plagiarism." As part of the suit against Stewart, he agreed to donate a portion of his song's proceeds to UNICEF.
