Life's too short to pretend not to like pop musicGlampoon, love ya and I know you have very eclectic taste in music and enjoy more than just a good pop song. You and Lily gave me a bunch of metal music links that I enjoyed a lot. I can't remember the names of the groups, but there was excellent singing, including one woman in particular. (I accidentally deleted a massive number of bookmarks a while back. I you have suggestions again, can you give me a few links.)
Anyways, a of lot pop I can listen to--but that doesn't mean I really like it. Plus, a lot of it grates on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard (young people might not know this sound anymore ). The worst are Taylor, Brittney, Rhianna, Madonna (yes, the original of the baby-voiced girls), Cyndi Lauper, and Carly Rea Jepson (just heard her new song) are typical of ones that really make me switch to another radio station. I get a visceral reaction. Sort of like what a lot of Atoppers have expressed about country music.
I'm so with Cassie's opinion on this. A long time ago someone here posted an article about how pop (popular) music has gotten simpler and less varied as time progresses. The article presented the results of a study about how melodies have shrunk to a smaller range of notes, how fewer chords are used, how lyrics have become simpler, and how there is much more repetition altogether. And yes, I listened to my share of popish music on the radio when I was a teenager, much of it I'd consider really silly now. This is reason I never liked 1950s pop/rock. Most of it was very predictable, mindless, and VERY simple. But, yes, I understand the attraction to many people.
When I listen to music, not all of it has to be outstanding (according to my tastes) in every way. A song needs at least something that feels a bit more complex/interesting. So I easily enjoy these songs from different time periods:
1. A song with great lyrics sung by a generic or not great voice (Bob Dylan)
2. A song with great instrumentals/beat/groove and great singing (Earth, Wind, and Fire) (okay it's a great song all around)
3. A song with a great singer and groove but lots of repetition (Kickin' In)
4. A song with great harmonies and okay lyrics (The Chordettes)
5. A song with a pretty repetitious melody but played by amazing musicians on REAL INSTRUMENTS. (I LOVE big band and used to listen to it compulsively when I was a kid--my father's music.)
6. And I even like a current hit or two. This is one of the few current (non-Adam) songs I have ever repeatedly gone to YT for. I loved it the first time I heard it. Only two chords (or so) but great groove, fun instrumentals (reminiscent of Earth, Wind, and Fire).
I guess it boils down to me feeling the ORIGINAL HIGH with music. We all feel it differently. I'm used to the kind of music high described in this video. My brain wants to fire on all cylinders. A lot of pop music is too dull. Watch it, people.
