Devilwoman and skrealitycheck, I can certainly feel your pain and wish you both great strength and good doctors. My daughter has borderline personality disorder and my granddaughter has early onset major depressive disorder and has done cutting and had 6 suicide attempts. My granddaughter is doing pretty well on medication and with therapy but my daughter is back in the hospital for a long stay. I just wish that people were as understanding about mental illness as they are about physical illness.
I think it is getting a bit better but you are so right. Part of the challenge is that we don't talk much about mental illness and emotional disorders. And I wish that there was as much research being done into the causes and treatment of mental illness as there is into physical illness. The lack of research is mostly due to the lack of understanding. For way too long there was a misunderstanding that it was just all in the head. That if people just changed there behavior there would be no mental illness. So why put money in researching something that was all in the head. But this so far from the truth in most cases. My mother had schizophrenia. She has been dead for 18 years. But only in the last couple of years have I started to hear about significant research findings concerning the causes of schizophrenia. In particular, I heard a talk from a Vanderbilt MD/PhD researcher at a biomedical research conference a year ago. His research indicates that a fetus with a certain genetic makeup who is exposed to a certain virus in utero is very likely to become schizophrenic later on. I.e., the virus turns the bad gene on. On the other hand, a fetus which does not have the bad gene will not develop schizophrenia after being exposed to this virus. This research was not at a conclusive stage, but other things I have read seem to indicate the current thinking is that schizophrenia often results from a bad gene being turned on by some environmental/physical factor. It gives me hope that someday scientist will be able to prevent the bad gene from being turned on by various factors. Of course other types of mental illness my have a totally different etiology. And I have only really looked into this one specific form of mental illness because of my mother. But, I think that most forms of mental illness are so much more complex than what the general public opinion considers it to be. And we need so much more research into the causes and treatments. And we need more resources for helping family members and friends understand and cope!!!

What I posted earlier was to help and I hope it did and does and I hope we can all share information and learn because maybe some of us has some answers some of us are looking for!!! I wish all of you nothing but the best and I want to post more but I have to take my daughter Andrea back to the treatment facility soon she was on a home visit today

Yay! Finally got my copy of The Original High! Had to wait for a paycheck, and then I discovered that Walmart only carries the 'edited' version. I like the full-flavor Adam experience. So I found it at Barnes & Noble, scored the very last copy! Woo hoo!

That Calgary Sun interview is nice, but too bad they didn't link to the Ghost Town video (at least!) rather than the Trespassing lyric Fidel and the NCOE video! Geesh! I posted a link in the comment section but so far it is awaiting "approval." Geesh is right.
