Late night musings... I was listening to some Queen and Brian May interviews today, reliving the thrill of Adam in such legendary company. Putting together several comments about Adam, I realized something that seem to me to be extraordinary about Adam, the singer. Brian and Roger both have made comments about Adam being able to sing any song in the Queen catalog, in the original keys, and how unusual that is. How he can do it "in his sleep." How he is ready and willing to take on any song they suggest. How he goes above and beyond what is necessary. Brian has commented on the confidence Adam brings to the performance. That he KNOWS he can handle it. In a recent interview, when Adam was asked about the difficulty of singing Queen songs, he responded by talking about the challenge of finding the right balance of staying true to the intent yet making it his own. When he figured that out, then he could think about the vocal technique. The subtext to that response, to me, was "Vocally, I got this! It's not a consideration. I focus on other things to create the best performance." Putting it all together, what it says to me is something quite remarkable. Very few singers are able to take on practically any song. Most have to consider the range, the style, the intensity, the seriousness or lightness, whether it is heavy, dramatic or bubble gum. While they pick songs based on what they enjoy singing and what the audience enjoys hearing, they also have to consider what they can handle vocally and in terms of personality and emotions. Adam, on the other hand, seems to have no limits to what he can sing, and sing well. He chooses songs based on how they make him, and the audience, feel without having to think "CAN I sing it?" That is truly amazing, and impresses the hell out of me. Do you know what I mean? Have you noticed it as well? Yes, well put, Cassie. Adam knows himself very well - he knows his voice and that gives him confidence to take on any song in the Queen catalogue... He also knows if something is not for him - remember how he jokingly answered the question about Kanye's Bohemian Rhapsody? He said: I don't ever rap - and there's a good reason why. hahaha Now that's what I call very skillful shade! But it also tells us a lot about Adam the singer - he knows exactly all the 1001 flavours he can bring to the table and he is never going to claim that they are 1002. Do you know what I mean? You may call it humbleness, but I think it's about really knowing yourself. This also does not exclude the possibility of getting something new and original - after all, you can mix those flavours up to get something unexpected each time.... Mmmm, delicious... OK, now I've made myself hungry....

Yes, Adam does have the remarkable ability to shift through the many genres of music. I watched the excellent PBS show last week called "First You Dream – The Music of Kander & Ebb." There were six terrific Broadway singers on stage with an orchestra. I really enjoyed the show but kept thinking to myself that this is the world that Adam came from and how different it is from the pop world and Queen rock world that he inhabits now. Amazing!
