Adam Lambert: "I'm not the double of Freddie Mercury"The American artist has been chosen by the Queen as their frontman. Tomorrow night, in Milan, the only Italian date of her solo tour - Interview
Translated from Italian by GoogleIt was second in the talent American Idol in 2009 and, from then on, it is in fact part of the history of international music, so much to get to work with the Queen. What lies behind its so quirky style, in fact, is essentially a particular artistic sensibility and, above all, the simplicity of being himself even when with the Queen sings the songs that were, are and will forever Freddie Mercury.
On May 4, Adam Lambert arrives at Alcatraz in Milan to present the songs from his latest album, "The Original High" ( more here ). Soon after, the resumption of the tour with the Queen that will pass through our country (June 25 in Piazzola Sul Brenta, PD).
Adam, are you currently along two different tracks. On the one hand a solo career, the other one as Queen frontman. How would you define yourself?
Either way! In me there are lots of parties and I feel really lucky to have the chance to explore both. I love pop music - I like to write, record, sing and listen to music. But there is also a part of rock in me knowing that I am more and more with the Queen, and I have the chance to sing some of the best songs ever written, really enjoying myself. Crazy!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YykXqMNP2wIHow did you come to be the frontman of Queen?I met Brian and Roger to American Idol and I think that - from then on - there was a kind of bond between us. A couple of years later they contacted me and asked if I was going to sing with them at the MTV EMA's. I was terrified! "What will people think?", I told myself. "I can do it?". Brian and Roger have supported me a lot in that time, and we say that it all started from there.
In fact take the place of Freddie Mercury must not be far from simple. How did you live this enormous responsibility?Well I'm me. I always say I'm not a lookalike, I'm not trying to "be" Freddie. I'm just trying to do a tribute to him, a very different thing. Adam is on stage, singing the songs in my own way, and as it comes natural to me. It is a great responsibility to sing the music that he created and - from big fan - I do my best.
What can still say the Queen to the public? Especially to the younger ...Their songs have stood the test of time. They are just as popular today as they were then, and not just for the people who knew them when they came out: songs are important for people of all ages, from the elderly to younger people.
Last year during the Rock in Rio your piece as the Queen repertoire has been included. As there is the Queen in your songs to pop?
One of my songs, Trespassing , is strongly influenced by the Queen. They refuse to stick to one genre; they wrote amazing songs in completely different musical genres. During the Rock in Rio we did Ghost Town , a song of my last album. I really loved the way Brian and Roger have done: we had fun!
You've never hidden from the public to be homosexual. What difficulties did you face because of what? The world of music as is homosexuality?I think it can be serious talk of homosexuality in the world of music: I believe that this area will allow us to discuss and share many important topics and to still have a voice. It seems to have made many advances in recent years. Proof? Many gay artists have had a great success.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT_xnNh5wbETell us about your record of "The Original High". It's your third album. What made you want to publish it? The live performances with Queen influenced in this work?Yes, it's my third album, produced by Max Martin and Shellback. I called "The Original High" because I might have a different meaning depending on who you listen to. We are always looking for something, and we all have many "original highs" ( "original strengths" literally). One of my you sing in public. I'm lucky to have these two parallel projects with my music as a soloist and with the Queen.
Will you come back to Italy with the Queen on June 25 in Piazzola Sul Brenta. What can we expect? We will create a great show with lots of hits! Soon we will do the tests and we look forward to seeing how it goes.
