ITA -- the audience seems to have given them a 4.9/5 and that is what really matters. Reviewers seem a bit like lemmings to me. It used to be cool for reviewers to say Queen is great but Adam is no Freddie Mercury. Now it seems like it is reversed. But anyone who thinks Brian's 8 minute guitar solo is long, doesn't really get rock or the concept of Queen. At only 8 minutes isn't that a bit short for Brian? I guess the reviewer is lucky he didn't get one of the 15 minute solos. LOL It is unbelievably short -- it was around 15 minutes at many concerts in 2014, and much longer at many Queen and Q+PR concerts. Clearly the reviewer is not very knowledgeable about Queen live.

As I keep on telling everyone, it is way too short. Even 15 minutes is. For me the solo feels structured like an Indian raga, with an alaap (opening) and building up and flowing down from that. The really good performances I've seen take around 30-45 minutes per raga. That is the time you need to really build a story and get lost in the music. So... Somebody should tell Brian that he needs to play at least 15-30 minutes more.

Do we have this from Cologne? KQ thru STL.....REALLY CLOSE UP! You can really see the rain coming down when he picks up the umbrella. Oh cassie ! Worth listening to this STL! Towards the end he does this operatic thing that I think I've only heard him do in My Conviction. (Shamelessly showing my cluelessness in that field here). But I like it, more please!!!

I imagine the review pissed off lots of Queen fans. I can understand why. The author failed to recognize what amazing musicians and performers Brian and Roger are. But, I would like to offer another perspective. My guess is the reviewer is not a hard-core Queen fan from back in the day. For those fans, and fans of classic rock, an extended guitar solo with improv and wailing is de rigueur. As is a virtuoso drum solo. Brian and Roger are still at the top of their game with those featured solos that give them their moments to shine. For non-Queen-afficionados, and others not familiar with rock traditions, Brian's 8 or 15 minute winding solo is..... dare I say it? Boring. And drum solos? Kinda the same. They cause a drop of energy for some members of the audience. There is another "problem" with Adam being so compelling and masterful a frontman. The bar is set impossibly high. Why would the audience want to hear Roger or Brian sing, when Adam's voice is so much more powerful and soaring? And why would the band have their driving force of a lead singer off stage for any extended length of time? The momentum stumbles when Adam is gone. I am not talking about Queen and classic rock fans here. Those fans LOVE seeing Brian and Roger featured playing and singing. They are authentic. They are the originals. They are the icons. They are much more than a backing band or a vehicle for Adam Lambert. They ARE rock royalty. Adam's role is to provide a lead singer who allows Brian and Roger to bring their classic songs and performances to glorious life again. It is a balancing act to try to please all segments of a festival audience. I think they do it superbly. And, if Adam spurs Brian and Roger to "up their game", as they have claimed, Brian and Roger provide the song catalog and accomplished seasoned musicianship that let's Adam perform to his highest potential. He has grown enormously through working with them. I am ever grateful to Brian and Roger for bringing Adam on board. Cassie, this makes so much sense. i found myself seething at that review (except for the adam part, of course) and could not understand why he would degrade brian and roger the way he did. i am now positive that what you said is exactly what was going on. makes me have a big sigh of relief, especially since i've never read such harsh words about them. and by the way, i've saved your comments on adam's magnificent voice so i can read them later. i think i was too tired last night to fully comprehend what you were saying....and....i want to re-listen to the music a couple of times so i can really connect with what is going on musically. anyway, thanks for your lessons!
