I think there is a difference between bold and proud and brave versus flamboyant.
Adam will always be called flamboyant, because peeps will not let him climb out of that box, no matter how much mainstream he presents himself, but I think he is able to add the proud and brave and bold not only with us fans, but also with mainstream, if they ever get him as an artist, and I don't think that mainstream has gotten him yet.
I keep coming back to Picasso. Used him as example here before, but need to do it again. For years, Picasso copied the great artists before him, remained unrecognized by the public, except that people in the arts itself said he was really brilliantly skilled, especially his teachers said that. Others did not talk about him, but were busy with other things and other artists.
Eventually people started talking about Picasso having phases, especially the blue period became famous and known as terminology even among common folks without artistic training or knowledge about his life.
Yet, while people divided his life into color periods, that is not what Picasso's oeuvre ended up being about.
Cubism is what he would be known for as an artist. In the early works that was not visible at all.
I have no idea whether Adam will one day come out with something entirely new, but I do think it is possible, because he is so different to other current artists in pop.
Example: Adam paints with music, uses his vocals to color his voice with the emotion he is trying to talk about, and he does it brilliantly. Yet, I have not heard the public ever recognize him for this. I don't know why? It is so obvious to me.
Most singers do basic emotions, like sing happy or sing sad, sure.
Ask the average pop singer to i.e. sing with contempt - and I think you would get blank stares. They may be able to act in that way, but sing? Nope, certainly not any of the male artists.
Adam does it brilliantly (i.e. 'There I said it..... )
or he sings 'pride' or he sings 'anger' or he sings 'playfulness'
In pop music, this is not something that is recognized as a skill or rewarded or appreciated.
Neither was it ever recognized on idol, for that matter and he did it a lot there too.
He uses the highs, the lows, the echo and resonance, the loud and silent, the introvert versus the projected singing, the strongly pronounced versus the slurred, the lyrical versus the staccato and so forth.
His fans loved his style, others just called it theatrical and were dismissive.
Singing does not have a word like onomatopoeia like poetry does, but it should. And hopefully it will be a tad shorter and simpler too.
But it would take only one song, where these pieces come together so clearly that could change perception. Instead of focus on whether you can sing with squeezed voice like most pop singers do today, or whether you sing about betrayed love, like most pop singers do today, maybe we could recognize something else for a change.
Maybe Adam will find his artistic lane or the right songwriters to pair up with. I don't believe he is quite there yet.
But I do believe that timid will not get Adam there, and in that sense, a turn back to boldness is in my book a good turn, especially, if it is paired with high fashion and stand-out style. And his NY suit said exactly that to me.
