Somehow I missed this particular question and response, although I did see some of the other questions. Previously I must have read a summary, not the whole interview. Posting in case some others also missed it. What was the biggest challenge you faced?
When I auditioned for Idol, I was in a really good place with who and what I was. I had no shame. After Idol, there were moments where I felt ashamed of my identity because I was made to feel that way, indirectly—by the industry I was in, by being a public figure, by being judged by pockets of people that I never would have encountered before. I was running around with artists and weird kids and then all of a sudden, Susie Homemaker is weighing in on what I’m wearing or who I’m kissing. Therefore, the recording industry and radio are going, “Maybe that’s not mainstream. We’re not going to make any money on this because of Susie Homemaker." That became such a mindfuck to me that I definitely had a moment here or there where I was like, “Should I even be doing this? Am I happy? Am I enjoying this? Is it worth it?” I would keep circling back to when I was onstage in front of an audience going, “This is what I’m supposed to be doing.” It was a lot I had to fight against.
From time.com/4657465/adam-lambert-interview/peace&love The snippet of the Time interview previously posted was just that, a snippet. This is the whole interview. It definitely gives us a better perspective of the barriers and pushback he encountered in the industry and at radio. This makes me a little sad that Adam was made to feel that way. It was his life and identity but some treated it as their fun and games. He also felt some pushback from radio and I saw that also. But some kept insisting it was never there. He is a strong man and my admiration for him grows everyday. But what is also gratifying is that with all the publicity he is getting for fronting Queen, most articles don't even mention his sexuality. In this article it was needed and helpful. It took some time but he is being more recognize for his huge talent now and that is great. Sort of like Beyonce, Drake and Rihanna, you know they are black and proud but readers and fans don't need to be reminded that they are 24/7. Their talent and success make a bold statement. Being gay is not a big selling point in American music nor should it be a hindrance now either. I believe Adam had a lot to do with that. His continued visibility and success is a major plus for the LGBT community and the rest of us as well. Great article.

The snippet of the Time interview previously posted was just that, a snippet. This is the whole interview. It definitely gives us a better perspective of the barriers and pushback he encountered in the industry and at radio. Things have changed a lot since Adam's time on Idol. Numerous openly gay contestants have appeared on other singing shows without the judgmental reaction and scrutiny that Adam faced. He said that for so long after Idol, his sexuality was all anyone wanted to talk about. It was such a big deal. He helped change all that so that others after him had an easier road. We really didn't see his discomfort during that difficult period after Idol because he handled himself so well, as he always does. But it hurts to read how he felt at that time. I know there have been many gay activists before him (and he would not call himself an activist) who helped make social changes, but I think Adam helped the cause move forward just by being open and honest and unafraid. I don't think the fact that the openly gay contestants on The Voice not facing judgmental reactions or scrutiny speaks to things having changed a lot. There was no judgment or scrutiny because no one cared. There was no media buzz about any of them. There is very little media buzz about any contestants on The Voice. Adam faced all of the scrutiny because the buzz about him was huge. You didn't even have to watch Idol to know who he was at the time. The mainstream audience felt he was being thrown in their face, or shoved down their throats (That one will never not be funny) because he was daily water cooler talk. They couldn't escape him. He was literally everywhere.

I don't think he ever said this exact thing before. I am not surprised -- we all could see it happening but it is different reading about it. It is a sad he had to go through all of that. Very sad! Now I WAS wondering if these kind of thing that made Sony changed their mind about Adam. Pretty sure he is talking about Sony/RCA/19 as the ones that were giving him pushback. Poor guy! 2012 must have been so hard for him!

Going to QAL in Nashville. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of artist come out for music events in town. Not many that I know but sometimes I recognize a few faces. It occurred to me that a number of AI8 contestants (and other seasons as well) live in Nashville. I wonder if any will be at the concert? Matt Girard performs there on a regular basis, as well as that eyeglasses guy, Kelly Pickler -- those I remember off the the top of my head. It's a great city to go out and about in - it's geared for these sort of music events. I had a pick of venues and decided on Nashville vs. the Verizon Ctr in DC just for the convenience of getting in and out of town. Can't wait! Last time I saw QAL drove 9 hrs to Detroit so am very happy to be close to home! This is so great to hear as Nashville is the concert my DD and I will be going to for some of the reasons you mention..We are flying in from Florida ...this information makes me very happy as I have never been there.

Hope fans who are at work/school can tune in. I know the party will be posted here, too. But it's fun to see it evolve as it's happening. Hope some good questions are asked (about A4 too).

I hope more than the same old stuff over and over again gets asked and answered. i still really want to know how the CMT performance of 'Girl Crush' came about. Whether it was Little Big Town members that initiated the idea or someone else.
