News Of The WorldA little background.
- After the band had gone all out on
A Night At The Opera and stayed the course on
A Day At The Races the band wanted to take a new approach. They couldn't go much further into production so they decided instead to strip back the production a TON. They decided to use these sessions to just play live in the studio as a rock and roll band.
- With the advancement of punk and new wave this seemed a wise approach. While the band wasn't going to ape these styles they would incorporate some aspects to their sound.
- The album was recorded in six weeks, which is very short by Queen standards.
- The album did well on the charts hitting #3 in the US, #4 in the UK and also hit #9 in Austria, #2 in Canada, #1 in the Dutch charts, #1 in France, #7 in Germany, #15 in New Zealand, #4 in the Norweigian charts, and #9 in Sweden selling somewhere in the area of 7-10 million copies.
- This is considered by Queen to be the start of the second of three eras of Freddie-era Queen. Myself, I consider it to still be apart of the first of three eras. As shown by the
Deep Cuts sets, the band considers the eras to be 1973-1976, 1977-1982, and 1984-1995. It is understandable as
A Day At The Races did end their run of throw the kitchen sink at it production, whereas this album strips back and starts their more straight forward approach. Myself I consider the eras as so: 1973-1979, 1980-1986, and 1987-1995. 1973-1979 is the band as a band rocking out doing everything together and at their creative peak. 1980-1986 was the start of a separate band, not so much working together and drifiting apart - sometimes still creating brilliance, other times going through the motions. 1987-1995 was the coming back together and while there are hiccups, it really is a band and family united.

- This track is basically just a title of a track that was recorded during these sessions. It has never seen the light of day and the only speculation was that it may have been written by Brian or that it may have been written by John. It is possible that it is a working title for a different song - we will probably never know.
As we delve into song by song of the main track on the album...I will NOT be going into WWRY/WATC. You know them very well by now and they will always be in my thread if you want to go see...but these posts will be to educate about the other lesser known tracks...
I will do one per day except today where I will post about the 2 tracks we've talked about the last few days....Fight From The Inside and Get Down Make Love....
