Update again from southeast Texas. Things went from bad to worse today. Beaumont lost all clean water sources. Their main water source and secondary water sources were flooded when the Neches River rose. My Mom, StepDad, and Grandmother are on the move again. The dams to the north of us are full and they had to open the flood gates, which will send more water down to the area my parents and grandmother live in. I haven't heard back from my Mom yet, but they were going to try to get into Louisiana, which is the only way out of my area today, and get to a friend's house in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The water is expected to get higher with the release from Dam B. The area rivers are not expected to crest until Saturday so nothing will recede until after that. I have been off work for one week as of tomorrow with no pay and until Beaumont gets water back on line we will not be able to open again. I am working for a temp service right now so I have no paid time off. Not sure what I am going to do. I can apply for disaster assistance, and hope for the best. Keep praying for Texas this is not over yet and recovery will take a long time. They are still evacuating people from apartment complexes just up the road from me. I am still hearing helicopters flying over all day. One of the hospitals in Beaumont closed, but the one my office is associated with is still open, but not sure for how long if they have no water. It is just surreal here. I am blessed that my house is dry and I still have electricity, as many have been without for days and now that the rain has stopped it has heated up again and will be truly miserable for those without power. So sorry!

I am so sorry lulu1265. There is another hurricane out there in the Atlantic. I pray it is not going to Texas. And I hope it isn't coming to Florida. This is such a horror story for people. I wish there was something I could do. It is awful to feel this helpless when someone you know is having such a hard time. I will keep throwing good thoughts for you into the universe. That is about all I can do. I feel like crying.

Lulu - a dear friend of mine has lost his home in Lumberton, just north of Beaumont. He and his two kids headed north first to College Station, but are now moving closer to Austin. His photo on Facebook shows his house almost totally submerged with only the tops of the windows showing. He was hoping to ride all of this out, but with the Neches River still rising, he took the kids and got out. A very harrowing and sad situation. I'm keeping in touch with my friend by Facebook, but my thoughts are with all of you in southeast Texas. Take care

The devastation in Texas is horrific. I know I have to contribute, but to which organization? My heart goes to Donor's Choose for the classrooms, and Episcopal Relief Fund for all else.

Our city went through the second largest disaster in Canada-- a 2013 flood.
The weather reporter said the rainfall that Houston was getting was 16x more than our rainfall by the 2nd day of the rain. Imagine what it is now. (Of note--the mountain water run- off into our rivers also contributed to the flood and that was not factored in.)
Lulu...every up- date you share --- no words! THE ENORMITY OF THIS southern US DISASTER and the implications for the mental and physical wellbeing of people ---well---it is ---beyond comprehension for me. Why do things like this happen---
As an aside ---for those who may poo poo the impact of climate change, here is some food for thought. It is hard to imagine that FIVE of the top 10 natural disasters in Canada, in terms of insurable costs happened in and around my city (Calgary). 4 of these 5, within 4 years of each other. And 2 fires in our province, make 6/10 for Alberta within 6 years. Resiliency is challenging, and government/ insurance assistance not without challenges. The ranks were: #2 - 2013 flood #7 - 1991 hail/rain #8 - 2014 hail/rain #9 - 2012 hail and rain #10 -2010 hail and rain storms (All water/rain/hail).
#1- 2016 and #5 - 2011 were fires in our province. So, only two of tihe biggest disasters were not water related. Only 3 of the top 10 natural disasters were not in our province ---#3 1998 series of ice storms , #4 - 2013 flood and # 6 -2005 flood.
