I opened the newspaper this morning and the grim reality of a major disaster zone here in Northern California is sinking in deeply. We are all connected to this tragedy either through dear Glambert friends who have been affected and are struggling, and may be additionally through relatives and loved ones who are in the midst of it all or likely know somebody who is. A friend of mine told me that her 90 year old mom, who lives in a big house near Santa Rosa, took in several people for shelter. I am wondering if the place in Napa is still standing where Adam performed for Live In The Vineyards. The heavy smoke drifted all the way to my area in the South Bay yesterday, about 80-100 miles away, and schools didn't allow kids to be outside. I am hoping for all these fires to stay separated and get contained soon, so that worries and fears can ease up and victims will be able to start a recovery process.

Thanks for those asking, my house is still standing, though I am not allowed back into the neighborhood. I'm staying with a sister in Petaluma (30 miles south). They really stepped up efforts to fight these fires today, help pouring in from many states and even Australia. We heard we had 2500 National Guard helping also. In my case, they worked all day yesterday dropping buckets of water and retardant by plane and helicopter over and over on my fire (Nuns fire) - and it's still only 2% contained. The winds were in my favor last night, as the fire blew East towards the city of Sonoma (which then impacted many others sadly, including other glamberts) and my home was spared.
They won't let us in because more wind is expected this weekend and there is no certainty which way they will blow - my home is so very close to a state park - there are still pockets of fire in that park, and also they're still setting "backfires" as a way of controlling the direction of the fire - burning all of the beautiful land but trying to save residential areas and lives.
I went to my office in Southern Santa Rosa today to do some work, but found only 2 employees out of 10 showed up; no mail delivery, no customers, 2 phone calls all afternoon. Schools are closed all week, most stores are closed or have limited hours, and most people you see outside are wearing masks due to the terrible air. It's surreal here in wine country, worst disaster I've ever experienced.

My husband and I had a wonderful vacation last October in northern California - from Eureka to Mendocino to Bodega Bay. We drove up the mountains and down to the sea, and inland to the vineyards. We happened to visit during a wet, rainy season. I think four out of our seven days were severely wet, and a couple of weeks later, there were floods where we had visited. Most of California has a very delicate balance with nature. Besides the weather, there is the danger of earthquakes. But, I love the vibrancy of the people of California. Hoping that the fires are contained.
