Queen + Adam Lambert live on Altice Arena: the queen will live [photo gallery + text]
Two years have passed since the last installment of the Queen in Rock In Rio Lisboa before 74 thousand people. Last night the group started the European tour in the Portuguese capital with an incredible and elaborate sound, light and video show that thrilled the Altice Arena.
Full house and everything ready, just past the scheduled time when the lights of the Altice Arena were turned off for the beginning of the concert. Frank, the robotic character on the cover of the 1977 album News Of The World , was the main character in the opening act of the show that acclaimed producer Ric Lipson designed. The song "Tear It Up" was the soundtrack for the entrance of the Queen on stage.
It was in 1971 that Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and Freddie Mercury formed the Queen. Almost 50 years later, and without two of the initial members, the themes of the ensemble remain in the bosom of world culture and few if any have missed the alignment of last night. "The Show Must Go On," "Another One Bites The Dust," "Do not Stop Me Now," or "Somebody To Love" are just a few of the songs that the arena audience sang at the top of their lungs, thrilled Brian May Portuguese support.
In 2014, the kid who became a star on American Idol, saw his childhood dream come true when he began the tour with the band that accompanies him since childhood. Yesterday, Adam Lambert revealed that he was a fan of Queen and was himself stunned by the position he was in, asking the audience to pay homage to Freddie Mercury. Discreetly, the lead singer also added the original theme "Lucy" that he released with guitarist Brian May in 2015.
Roger Taylor, one of the founding members and the iconic drummer of the ensemble, sang "I'm In Love With My Car" and, with the same energy (or almost) of old, participated in a percussion duel with the drummer accompanying the band this tour.
Although only of virtual form, was present also the iconic Freddie Mercury. In a touching tribute, and alone in the center of the arena, Brian May played and sang "Love Of My Life", thrilled the whole audience who applauded effusively the singer. The virtual homage was repeated in Encore with a video of the singer's interaction with the audience at Wembley Stadium in 1986.
The farewell to British royalty was crowned in the head and to the sound of the great and unforgettable classics that left (finally) the whole standing audience: "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions", both from the album News Of The World .
The debut of Queen's European tour was last night at the Altice Arena, but the set follows tomorrow for Spain where they will continue the long awaited tour.

In the Queen's show with Adam Lambert there's room for everyone to shine: even Freddie Mercury, in memory and on the screen
08.06.2018 at 1h43
The Altice Arena, in Lisbon, attended this Thursday to a moving show of affection, by the Portuguese public, by the royalty of the British rock. The American Adam Lambert continues to live the dream, Brian May took selfies to later remember
A show like the one that Brian May and Roger Taylor have been offering Queen fans over the past six years carries several risks. Perhaps the most obvious is to alienate all those for whom the replacement of Freddie Mercury by any singer represents an outrage; another will be to dose poorly the protagonism of who is on stage; still another, to transform the concert into a spectacle that was too nostalgic and anchored in the past. Fortunately, all these dangers are skilfully skirted by these old foxes (a compliment, not least because Brian May is dedicated to the defense of those noble animals), who two years after passing through Rock in Rio landed at Altice Arena on a rainy night to do the delights of Portuguese fans for two hours.
Living the dream of singing with the Queen since 2012, Adam Lambert knows his role and does not seek to outshine his stage mates: Brian May, perhaps the humblest of guitar heroes of his generation, Roger Taylor, on drums and in the voice of some songs, and all the musicians who remain anonymous until, in the end, they are presented with affection.
From trousers to black and pink squares, silver crowns and wetsuits, or riding a bicycle, Adam Lambert is, of course, the center of attention wherever that is desirable. Engaging in both vocal performance and theatricality, he is a captivating figure and clearly a great choice for this endeavor, in his own words, "celebrate the Queen and Freddie." But as he will also tell us, the American (who sometimes is too much, as when after 'Fat Bottomed Girls' asks if there is "fat bitches" in the room) is not there to imitate the inimitable, but to honor their inheritance. And, by not overdoing his style, vocal and visual, he does a good job of escaping the band's homage spectrum.
In their first concert since March, when they performed in Australia and New Zealand, the Queen and Adam Lambert introduced some changes in the lineup, which kicked off with "Tear It Up, Seven Seas of Rhye, Tie Your Mother Down 'and' Play The Game '. The 'We Will Rock You' Manifesto, which opened earlier this year, came to an end, and it was with the sequel 'Killer Queen' (sung by Adam Lambert on top of a replica of the ' the 'World', album whose 40th birthday serves as a pretext for the tour), 'Do not Stop Me Now' and 'Bicycle Race' that came the biggest explosions of joy of a public always effusive (on the benches, at one point exploded a discussion between two fans, who often rose to dance, and a seated spectator, annoyed by the fact that the movements led to the visibility of the stage. "If I'm going to sit down, I'm going to Mass!" one of the accused ', and everything stayed the same).
From the big stage, surmounted by screens where the three main protagonists of the evening were seen in detail, there was a passerela, or lingueta, in which everyone had the right to shine: Adam Lambert, of course, entertainer by nature, in any stage like fish in the but also Roger Taylor, who will play the drums closer to the public and, in the late evening, will engage in a "battle" with the second drummer, Tyler Warren, out of the gloom for a heated duel, and Brian May. years (makes 71 in July), the guitarist and astrophysicist ends up being in the center of some of the most exciting moments of the night. When you first go through the passerelle and the audience gives you a huge ovation, there is no escape from the shiver. In a rare balance between virtuosity and modesty, or at least discretion, Brian May is a rare jewel of this Queen-named crown, and Adam Lambert knows how to give him the leading role he so timidly thanks the veteran.
Alone with an acoustic guitar, at the tip of the tongue, Brian May was also moving to sing 'Love of My Life', with the audience, emboldened, to accompany him in the huge chorus. "Are you ready?" She asks at one point, and this writer writes that she was not ready to suddenly have Freddie Mercury on the big screen, in a kind of virtual duet with her old friend. There are those who argue that the future of live shows passes through here and through holographic tours, and there is no doubt that, strange as the idea may seem, tonight the audience rejoiced with the possibility of applauding Freddie Mercury in Lisbon. Later in the encore, we would see him again in his yellow jacket, inviting fans to sing with him, before the farewell with the heavyweights 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are the Champions', under a rain of confetti.
Over the course of two hours, the emphasis has always been on celebrating: to celebrate a legacy (the songs of one of the greatest catalogs of pop-rock hits of the last decades), celebrate Freddie Mercury, celebrate the bond between musicians and assistance with Brian May wear a self- stick to photograph, always smiling, with the audience and the benches behind, filled with satisfied fans.
Under the bundles of colored lights, 'Who Wants To Live Forever' also gained a place among the most touching memories of tonight, the balance between the initial modesty - with the invisible musicians on the stage erased - and the final epic, in a rapturous and accurate interpretation by Adam Lambert.
Until the end of this reunion with the Portuguese public there was still time for 'The Show Must Go On', 'Under Pressure', 'Radio Gaga' or the classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Everything managing to avoid recording band versions or karaoke night - it's work.
