Ruhrnachrichten.de - Translated by Google Queen and Adam Lambert in the Cologne Lanxess ArenaA great evening full of pop memories COLOGNE Adam Lambert and Queen have offered the Cologne audience a very special evening. Exception genius Freddie Mercury may never be enough for Lambert, but he makes for an evening full of memories.
"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? "Adam Lambert asks this question from the greatest operatic hit in rock history every night, when he returns to the stage with Brian May and Roger Taylor, the legends of the group Queen. In the Cologne Arena he let 12,500 fans feel the irrepressible joy that he feels. At some point, Adam Lambert simply addresses the biggest problem of the show himself: "I know what you think: Pff, that's not Freddy ..." And of course, the musical actor and second of the eighth season of American Idol the exceptional genius Freddie Mercury vocally and by expression and energy level not nearly reach the water. Lamberts voice is supple and articulate But his voice is supple and articulate enough to effortlessly sing the intricate tunes of Queens's biggest hits that never sound complicated but always slip into his ear as he whirls across the stage in extravagant outfits. For example, at the beginning he wears a long, red, sleeveless leather coat that emphasizes his armtatoos, glittering platform shoes, lots of jewelry and neat Kayal around his eyes. He is never embarrassed by big show effects at the center of the gigantic stage, but sometimes he has to leave them completely to the legends that are at stake here: Brian May uses every opportunity for extravagant e-guitar solos and Roger Taylor delivers first a drum battle and then sings amazingly David Bowie's part in "Under Pressure". Mix of homage and live experienceSo this evening is a stimulating mix of homage and original live experience and from "Killer Queen" to "I Want It All" is really not a hit. At the end of the day, the classy Queen + Adam Lambert played 27 pieces. Only one of Lambert is there - "Lucy" - but that was not the point here. www.ruhrnachrichten.de/Nachrichten/Ein-grosser-Abend-voller-Pop-Erinnerungen-1294644.html

I think this is an almost stellar review, and that's why it bugs me that the writer can't give Adam more recognition - he is the one who is carrying the show! I find it surprising that Adam gets high marks on his voice and yet there's no comparison to Freddie? (I wonder how Adam feels when he reads these reviews ugghh)

I LOVE THIS. Please let TSMGO stay in the setlist for Vegas Really really hope it stays until the end of this summer tour and they keep in Vegas too. It is my favourite Queen song and Adam is the only singer in the world right now who can do it justice. He said in interviews that it was one if his favourite songs too and it is extremely difficult to sing. I remember they dropped it during the 2014-2015 tour and did it only a few times in summer 2016. I am so happy that Adam feels he can do now. And it is smart to have Brian solo as a break between WWTLF and SMGO.

I find it surprising that Adam gets high marks on his voice and yet there's no comparison to Freddie? (I wonder how Adam feels when he reads these reviews ugghh) Sigh. So, the Freddie disclaimers are back again. Was Freddie recently nominated for saintdom or something? He has become a mythical figure. I just don't get it. Of course, I never did get Freddie. As I have said many times, range is not the most important criterion for a great singer. Not even in the top 5 criteria. For trained singers, it is generally not even mentioned as an attribute when discussing a singer. And in the videos we have of him in live performance, his voice was inconsistent. It cracked. He altered melody lines he could not sing live. HIs tone could be strident and brittle at times. It lacked warmth. I understand that rock voices are not expected to be pretty, but live, his was not, IMO. Freddie was also not, to my mind, handsome. Or sexy. Certainly not graceful like a dancer. He was never a figure I could have a fangirl crush over. I will concede that he was a compelling figure on the stage. And commanded the audience. But I wouldn't say he charmed them. More intimidated them. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, and almost sacrilege to write. But I am just so tired of the "he's no Freddie" meme. Adam is in not just another league to Freddie vocally. He is in another universe. He has remarkable control of his voice, low to high, soft to powerful, tender to belting, staccato to long, flowing phrases. HIs tone is rich with great resonance and harmonics. He has the technique to deliver songs with a variety of styles. He can actually sing operatically when the song requires it. HIs renditions have an arc to them, a beginning, middle and end. He rarely if ever forces a note. Many other singers can only sing certain notes by hitting them with maximum force and intensity. Adam can caress them as well. And Adam is remarkably consistent from night to night, city to city, tour to tour. That is something that is a basic requirement for classical singers, but is not that common in rock and pop. And if we must mention range as a criterion, live, Adam demonstrates a greater range with greater control and flexibility than Freddie did. To me, Adam is classically handsome. He can ooze sexiness. (And be silly or goofy as well.) Adam moves with the grace of a trained dancer. I know he says he never studied dance, but in his many years of musical theater, and with his many dancer friends, I think he has picked up a lot. I have seen countless photos of him where his poses, his posture, and his hands and arms look like those of a dancer. Adam is also a compelling figure on stage. He draws attention. He also shares that attention with Brian and Roger, which is gracious. Adam charms the audience and wins them over, every night. So, in what way is Adam a lesser frontman, a lesser singer, a lesser entertainer than Freddie? He is different from Freddie, to be sure. But he never suffers from that comparison, IMO.

cassie I do understand why fans would do it. My own father is a huge Queen fan but he is more of a Freddie fan. It is akin to worship for him. I am an Adam fan both as a singer and as a person, but it is not like I worship Adam. Yet if someone says a wrong word about Freddie even if it is the truth my dad won't have it. For him Freddie is untouchable. But that is the fans. What the press is doing is simply unjust. I do think many of the reviews are from older Queen fans but it comes as unproffesional when the critics own bias is published in the press. THAT is what bothers me everytime I read the reviews. It is ok for fans to worship Freddie but not ok for the press.

Cassie, this is why I stopped reading reviews a long time ago.
I have had people tell me that they wish they were a kid again because life was so easy then. No they don't because the problems may seem small in perspective but they were huge then. Even the good parts were not as idyllic as they remember. The same goes with Freddie, he is a memory or emotion that can be enhanced at will and because of that Adam will never compare. Of course there are videos and recordings of Freddie, but who knows if these critics even consult them. They are really talking about the legend.
Adam is my own developing legend and fortunately I am not concerned if anyone else likes him. It would be nice to read glowing reviews but it is not necessary.
metislight, good point about fans versus critics.

You said it perfectly, cassie . At least for me. Thank you. I needed it. metislight and LindaG23 , good perspective, each of you! I generally don't have a problem when someone simply doesn't like Adam, especially a longtime Freddie fan, but if a critic appears so obviously biased it bugs me. He writes a very good review of the show, is highly complimentary of Adam's voice, and claims at the same time that Adam can't come close to Freddie, not even vocally. That for me is ridiculous.
