LGBTQ youth today face increased bullying and cyberbullying: the latest LGBTQ youth research found that 85% of LGBTQ students report being verbally harassed and nearly half experience cyberbullying. High rates of bullying has alarming ramifications on LGBTQ youth. In August 2018, news broke that a nine-year-old boy in Denver, Colorado took his own life after being bullied for coming out as gay. His story made international news. Today, young people too often open social media to find news stories like this or about LGBTQ people who have been victims of hate crimes and discrimination.
For nearly a decade, #SpiritDay has been a day when LGBTQ youth can enter the classroom or go on social media and find an overwhelming number of messages of acceptance from celebrities, networks, brands, landmarks, sports leagues, and other notables.
GLAAD amplifies the voice of the LGBT community by empowering real people to share their stories, holding the media accountable for the words and images they present, and helping grassroots organizations communicate effectively. By ensuring that the stories of LGBT people are heard through the media, GLAAD promotes understanding, increases acceptance, and advances equality.
