You’re not gonna tell me who I am. I am gonna show you who I am.

I like that response from Javi. Shows the steeliness and resolve he will need to not let himself be defined by their preemptive judgement. He will need to make them eat their words, and I hope he will get a chance to do that. It is so unfair. But apparently, some folks have learned nothing in the last 10 years.
I remember in 2009, Adam who had come fresh from AI, was being eaten alive by the British press, who at that time was horrible to him. The Germans were lazy and copied whatever the Brits were saying without bothering to check, and so they fell into that same disrespectful tone.
Adam called them out on it.
'How was your interview with Bravo TV' (in Munich), he had been asked, by a journalist expecting some eager kiddo to be answering how wonderful and starry-eyed he was about being interviewed by Bravo TV.
'.....The usual'. Adam said: 'Gay - gay - yay - yay'.
The answer spread like a wildfire among those who were set to interview him the next day.
He was not disrespected by the German press again. Not by Bravo TV, nor by any of the competitors for that matter. They ignored him for a while, but they were from then on respectful whenever they did talk to him.
Javi will need that same determination.
He is being hit with exactly the same thoughtless and insulting 'she got a pretty face, must be a bimbo', tone and prejudice that women have to fight so often.
In the end, magazines like OUT feel threatened by bridge-builders like Adam. Their whole mojo is that they are guerilla fighters for a battle that needs to unrelentingly be fought against the straight world. People like Adam, who have one foot firmly in the out-there, flamboyant wing of the gay community, and yet with the other foot stand their ground as young professionals who do not stop at the community boundaries, but rather reach across the aisle and work with both sides, such people challenge the foundation of their world view. So they rather fight their own community than change their backwards views.
Javi gets hit with that right now - by extension, imo. They don't respect Adam, so they are not going to respect his boyfriend either.
Sadz. And you would think that OUT magazine had a bit of time to think things over. I guess not. They make themselves obsolete, imo. Eventually, they die out. I am not saying there are not tons of battles left to fight, I just don't think that those are the battles they are fighting.
