I don't have a problem with people interpreting art each in their own fashion. But too many times they project their own interpretation on to the artist. It's perfectly fine to say "This is the way I see it and I don't care for it" but not fine to say "this is what you must have meant therefore I am upset with you".
It is impossible to please everyone. My interpretation was that most of the vices shown were not presented in a positive light. The smoking and alcohol were not making people happy. Smoking girl put down the cigarette and connected with another person and found joy. Those who were drinking put down their drinks. I don't see the green elixir as a drug per se. After all in one story it is literally an album. I think that the poster who saw it as each awakened by stimulation of one of the senses is on to something. But only Adam can say what his intention was. I wouldn't presume to speak for him.

Is it good from Adam for fans to keep tying to push this drug story? If that is what you think the message is fine. But is it really fair to Adam if that is not what his reference is and the message he is trying to convey. He told us what it means. But even if you thought something different (because of his past or who you think he is as a person), why is your meaning more important than his? It is his art and his message. Why isn't that good enough? Are we really hoping that the other interpretation takes off? I don't know what the "drug story" is. He explicitly references drugs in the video and confirms the reference in his twitter chat (Lucy is slang for LSD tied in with Neil Diamonds Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"). Just because the LSD stamp is enchanted (or Grandpa believes it is an LSD stamp) doesn't make it less of a reference. (twitter quotes below) There is a difference of opinion between those who think that no drug reference should ever be used and those who don't care and that seems to be pretty heated. But I'm more concerned for those who just want to believe that drugs were not referenced at all and that I think is akin to an ostrich burying it's head in the sand. Why instead of a "story" or a "gate" can't we treat it as a conversation starter? I'm happy to discuss it as metaphors and ways to find your life spark without drugs or alcohol, I don't see that as different from the story Adam talks about in the first quote. I don't think this is a pearl clutching moment. leah // #neweyes @okdeku is there a story behind new eyes?
ADAM LAMBERT The idea is that each of the characters in the video are discovering or rediscovering a passion. Enchanted items are placed in each scene that act as a catalyst.
Cassie 🐱 #NewEyes 👁@kittyforsatan At the credit Joseph Lopez was “Lucy’s grandpa” is this somehow related to the song “Lucy” from TOH ????????
ADAM LAMBERT No. Lucy is slang for what Grandpa uses to reopen his jaded eyes.
mmc@tchrsd @adamlambert How do you respond to those expressing angst about drug references in video?
ADAM LAMBERT Tune in Turn on Drop Out. Medicine comes in many forms.
eta: fixed Lucy in the Sky reference and tried to tighten up spacing on the quotes

LOL, that was the Beatle's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, not Neil Diamond.

Fine. Then drugs it is. Spread the word. Why would anyone listen to Adam when you and others can just explain what HE meant?

I guess I see the "drug" in the video as more metaphorical. Sure, the characters are taking this "substance" in various forms. They go from sad to happy. To me, the metaphor is that the substances are the new eyes that the characters use to enrich their lives and be happier, but not in a literal, drug-induced way. Somehow this is not the same to me as more hard, druggie sorts of videos, which there have probably been plenty of. I stand by my belief that this love song is not simply about taking drugs. This video has really created a stir. It was not what we expected. I hope his performance of it on Idol will be clear and intelligible so that the lyrics are the main focus. I prefer the audio-only to the video, voice-wise. I can just hear it better. This is the first song in what we hope is a succession of good songs from Velvet. They will certainly not all sound like NE. Adam is taking risks, renewing himself as a solo artist, thinking ahead to the future beyond QAL. All that being said, I hope we get some glory notes. We need some right now. LOL It surprises me that so many of Adam's fans don't see the layers, the complexity, and the beauty in the video, especially as he explained prior to the release what the song is about. The mv is different from what we expected, but still... there a lot of things besides drugs to find passion and joy again. Love is one example and we do see it in Adam himself. This is the first time that Adam released the music video at the same time as the new single, right? As there seems to be some reservation from within his fandom, I am wondering if in hindsight NE would have been more "digestible" if Adam had released the song first, gave a live performance next, and then presented the video. I personally DO NOT need glory notes right now, but I am happy to enjoy them another time. For me, there is so much more to Adam's artistry and appeal than him showing off his pitch perfect vocals up and down the musical scale. I actually like sultry, slightly restrained, and "velvety" Adam. I know many feel differently.

It all kind of reminds me of when I was in 10th grade and wrote essays in English class in high school interpreting the meanings behind The Rolling Stones record album liner notes. Thank goodness neither I or my mother saved those essays, lol! I guess I’m now just into enjoying the atmosphere, the musicality, the voice, and less into trying to find a deeper meaning. (And I’m planning to enjoy the hell out of the Stones when I see them in August and not worry about the problematic lyrics in some of the songs!) Life is too short.

Well, at least nobody is complaining that there is a person who put his feet on the couch without taking his shoes off 🤷🏻♀️
That being said: oh of course there are drug references. But those are not the core of the video. For me this is about finding that thing that pulls you out of a complacent and/or sad life and makes you live joyfully again. Love, music, being yourself. Choose your medicine (like Adam said)

Yep to everything you said Jablea. I am in the “I don’t care that there is a drug ref” camp. It’s there but it’s not “the point,” Adam was clear in the mv AND in his tweets that the point or theme of the mv is discovering/rediscovering passion. I love the song and the mv, and it is super exciting to see this new era launch being well-received - and the tv premiere of the song is still ahead! Posters like me who love/like the song and/or mv, don’t despair! and don’t let others suck the joy out of this for you! (I came here to celebrate yesterday and was surprised that there were a lot of negative comments but, then again, I wasn’t.)
