Oops. I posted this on yesterday's thread. Duh. So I am bringing it over here.
I had a delightful chat with a certain professional opera singer today. I admit I may have pumped her a bit about some concerns we have had about Adam and his voice recently (cold weather, illness). She actually laughed. Said we don't have to worry about Adam's voice. Said Adam knows how to take care of his voice and does so very well. He would never do anything to harm it, as he knows what he's got.
One of his performances just before he had to cancel due to illness, some of us noticed he sounded not quite up to his norm. She said if he had a stomach bug it would have been very difficult for him to sing. Singing as he does requires a great deal of energy and stamina which illness would deprive him of. But, not to worry. He was wise to cancel until he got healthy again.
Also said she is hearing new techniques and is sure he is working with a vocal coach, as some of you had wondered.
She speaks about him as a Singer. As in, "We singers know.... We singers do...." I pointed out that many singers don't know and don't do what Adam does. She clarified that she puts Adam in the category of professional, formally trained opera singers and the like, not pop celebrities. A Singer recognizes one of their own. Smile.

I love hearing praise for Adam from singers who really know what they're talking about! He is in an elite class of singers, and he is one of the best!

cassie I'm kinda late replying to what you said about the word singers, i thought about it and I find it quite dismissive of pop singes and pop music. I disagree, at least in part. You can't deny the vocal prowess of Tori Kelly or a Ariana Grande. Theses are two very skilled vocalists. Also a Sarah Bareilles (She's more nuanced) or the girls from little mix (DAMN I wish they dressed better!) It's like different sports. A sprinter wont run a marathon and vice versa. I take vocal lessons and the last months I've been working on classical pieces. Now we are doing pop again, so i stay versatile. I couldn't make the pop song sound like shit. It's just a different ball game. This all not to deny that of course not everyone selling big records is a vocal virtuoso. DUH...obviously not. I just don't like people dismissing it in this general sense.

I just don't like people dismissing it in this general sense. My response or immediate reaction to a song or a singer has only in small parts to do with the level of training of the voice behind it. I often think that vocals can be overrun or overdone. What I like most about Adam's voice are the different colors and nuances and how he connects to the lyrics of a song. Yet, I do understand how good a singer he is, and I do occasionally enjoy the evaluation and confirmation from experts.
