WORCESTER - Christmas came a little early in Central Mass. this year, thanks to chart-topping, multi-platinum-selling artist Adam Lambert and the XLO’s Almost Acoustic Xmas which landed Thursday night at Mechanics Hall. The hottest ticket in town, Lambert - who is best known for being robbed as the winner of the eighth season of “American Idol” and filling the shoes of Freddie Mercury by fronting Queen for a series of successful arena tours - proved early and often that he doesn’t need to fleece the Queen catalog to be relevant. He’s already a superstar. Lambert can sing. He can dance. He can command a stage. He can put an audience in a trance and, most importantly, he looks great doing it. Wearing a dark velvet, bell-bottomed suit, silver platform shoes and big sunglasses that would make Sir Elton John envious, the flamboyant and openly gay superstar opened his 19-song, 70-minute set with “Stranger You Are” and “Superpower,” a pair of songs from his current EP, “Velvet: Side A.” Singing about the neo-hippie themes of freedom and freedom of expression, Lambert, who has no trouble expressing himself, sounded, at times, like a cross between Lenny Kravitz, Prince and George Michael as he passionately belted out the tunes and soulfully caressed the lyrics. Sporting sparkling glitter on his eyelids, heavy massacre around his peepers, a scoundrel’s beard on his face and springy jet black hair on top of his head and those blessed pipes, Lambert continued to drive the mostly female audience crazy on “Trespassing,” the funk-heavy title track of his 2012 sophomore album, which seamlessly segued into the only Queen song of the night, “Another One Bites the Dust.” Talk about “Killer Queen” indeed. After amusingly complaining that wearing “velvet is (expletive) hot” and dabbing the sweat off his brow with a wash cloth, Lambert delivered the revved-up “Ready to Run” and “Comin’ In Hot.” Unleashing his sensual, borderline falsetto while suggestively gyrating his hips, Lambert’s recent single, “Comin’ in Hot” certainly lived up to its name, and then some. Finally taking off his jacket, Lambert kicked into heavy-duty, Casanova-mode with the steamy, funk-fest “Overglow” and the retro-glam-rocker, “Loverboy.” Seeing these nocturnal smooch-fests as an open invitation to party, a gaggle of enthusiastic females started dancing in front of the stage (and in front of the good seats), singing along and yelling out such accolades of affection that included “I love you, Adam” and “I just want to touch your hair.” More.. www.telegram.com/entertainmentlife/20191213/superstar-adam-lambert-wows-worcester-audience
