Just catching up on this weekend's events, totally mesmerized by the Fire Fight Australia concert. They did so well, and leave it to Adam to make a fluorescent green leopard print set relevant, haha! I just bought a new 55" TV and that's the first thing I watched on it. OK, that's a lie - 2nd. Played the ABC documentary this morning as I was getting ready to leave the house. On a serious note, danyone know how much the Aussie charity concert helped to raise for the cause? I heard it was close to 10 million raised! That was 20 hours ago, so I bet it is over AUD10 million now.

The Norte-Dame fire brought over One Billion Euros in pledges for restoration - no concert was needed to generate it. I find it painful to see the lack of support for the Tragedy that befell the people and the natural resources of Australia ( as well as Brazil earlier).
i hope there will be more giving after the TV outlets around the world will run the concert.

Agreed!! 💚 You made a really good point, nica575 . Notre-Dame is just a "building" but obviously lots of sentiments and emotions attached to it in the western world, and I do not mean to diminish its historic value. The fires in Australia (and elsewhere around the world, including the Amazon) are an ugly face of the complexity and deeper sadness of our global issue, which may make people feel less encouraged to "invest". I don't quite get it either.

I don't quite get it either. Notre Dame isn‘t „just“ a building. It’s a church. THE cathedral of France. And one of the oldest in the world as well. I‘m not religious myself, but I‘m sure almost every catholic person in France gave money for Notre-Dame. That might even be similar to Australia. The difference is that the wealthiest families of France gave HUGE amounts of money. More than 90% of the whole amount comes from 3 families, that own big companies, that everyone in the world knows. I‘m sure, there is a business strategy behind it. Helping to rebuild one of THE symbols of the French nation makes them look great. And makes sure they will be welcomed to heaven after their death (if they believe in heaven). I don’t think it’s the amount of people, who are willing to help. The difference are these 3 (or so) companies. And the will of the politicians to do something (but that’s another thing)...

I put "building" in quotations as obviously Notre Dame is more than just that. Yes, it is a symbol for many, be it religious or not. I did not realize that most of the $$ comes from 3 wealthy families in France but I also know of American families who have donated. I am not criticizing the donations, why would I, but for some strange reason people don't get equally invested in worthy causes, and there are many.

I just tried to point out, that I‘m not sure, if people on the whole consider Notre Dame worthier than Australia. With Notre Dame you got all donations in one bucket. And there had been these huge donations by those few families. From what I‘ve heard the donations without these are nothing too special.
