I did my "Walk Away the Pounds" mile and immediately following lay down on my bed and took a nap. I am so out of shape that I just made it through one mile. I would like to end up doing at least two miles by March 20. I have light weight tapes which I will do also. At my age, muscle starts decreasing in your body and you really have to work to keep some of it.
My husband and I finished our dinner tonight, looked at each other, and both said "I could eat what I just ate all over again." It is those pesky 1/2 cups and ounces that kill us. I usually only eat 4 to 5 ounces of meat for dinner, but my husband is used to double that. I hope he sticks with it because it is so helpful to have someone in the house that is suffering too.
The first day is almost over. I have found from other diets that if I can get through 3 days without cheating, I can then get through 3 weeks. If I can get through those 3 weeks without cheating, I can usually make it through 3 months. I really have to talk to myself and never, never cheat. If I cheat, it is all over. I somehow lose momentum, and just give up.
I will be coming here for hints on how to stay on my diet. I do chew sugarless gum when I get crazy hungry. That does seem to help. Also, a cup of hot tea will help me too.
My name is JustKaren, and I'm a foodaholic. I eat when I am bored, indecisive, or depressed ... and lately there has been too much of all of that in my life. Last year I lost a lot of weight, but wasn't very successful at keeping it off.
I'm going to stick with a one-pound-a-week goal, so that would be 11 pounds by March 20. And I'm going to start using Lose-It again ... I kept losing weight as long as I recorded it in Lose-it, but as soon as I stopped recording I started gaining again. :(
And I'm also going to get back to 45-minutes a day on the Gazelle at least 5 times a week (that's a one-hour TV show without commercials on Netflix ;D ). The Gazelle is similar to a Nordic Track, and gives a good low-impact cardio workout.
So today was my first weigh in. Goal = 11 pounds, 0 lost, 0 total.
Ok. I will officially start tomorrow--family still here till then and I just cannot do this with them here. I am pleased to see some of you also have loose goals (pants fitting rather than pounds off etc) as I simply don't want to go near that scale ever again (I swear last time I tried dieting the dang scale was broken--completely stuck on the same number I tell you--no matter what I did!)
How cool is it that there are people all around the world all working together on this?!!! I am already inspired by all the great ideas here. I will watch the ab video, am looking forward to the apple/sprite treat, and I also like the idea of exercising to an increasing number of songs, especially since it ties Adam into it. The first few days may be experimental for me. Good luck everyone!!
Count me in! I would like to lose 10 pounds and really focus on more regular exercise. I recently re-joined a local health club and will go there at least 3 times a week ( I will get an insurance discount as a bonus too, so there is even more motivation.)
My diet goal is to reduce the processed carbs and all sugars in my diet. I was able to lose 10 # last year with this goal, but have drifted to back to my former unhealthy ways.
My breakfast and mid-day snacks have been a protein-green shake. The protein keeps the hunger cravings away and the "green" supplements what is sorely missing in my diet.
The recipe: 2 1/2 cups water, 1/2 banana, 2 scoops protein powder, 1 scoop ground flax, 1 large handful of greens (spinich seems to work the best) and a few ice cubes. Blend and drink for breakfast and for "snacks." I will vary the fruit or the green for variety. The flax is a good source of fiber and has some cholesterol and possibly menopause benefits.
Glitztripper, I’ve got an elliptical too. Makes squeaks during the middle of the night when I can’t sleep and try to use it so it collected mostly dust too. It hurt my barefeet and doesn’t feel good in slippers either so now I’ve got a pair of slip on plastic clogs that I can put on for my 5 minutes.
Prism, I didn’t lose much last time either but we are experienced now.
Flowergirl, way to go with the exercising. Glad last year got you started.
Stardust, yay you’re back too. That Christmas 5 will come off easy.
Since we want to strengthen ourselves without killing ourselves or aggravating any frozen shoulders here is an alternative to those four on the floor pushups. My shoulders used to get so sore when I had to do dives for volleyball practice. That was 30 years ago and my shoulders have never been that strong since. For those that are trying to keep up with the spin numbers these might be a good alternative too.
What’s a wall pushup? Find a wall, stand some distance from it, lean forward and put your hands on the wall (don’t bend at the waist), then bend and straighten your elbows just as if the wall was the floor. By standing farther away you add more of your weight and makes it harder. Stand closer to make it easier. You can even push yourself away from the wall each time if you wish.
Perhaps the wall you pick would be a good place for a GB picture? Just saying
I see that several of you want to post every day. Yay! I won’t be alone. If we can keep the thread busy it does seem to help everyone stay on track.
Okay, I think 10 lbs is a reasonable goal for me. today - 0
1) I will try to cut back on the snacking, altho I'm eating pretty good, I'm eating too much.
2) I will try to keep a food diary, because I do seem to do better when I do that.
3) I am trying to get started on an appropriate exercise regime. I have been very bad and haven't really exercised much for the last year, since I retired. Too much sitting in front of the computer. Problem is bad knees and my ortho MD said no walking or treadmill except what is absolutely necessary. Have been reluctant to join health club because of the cost, but I'm afraid I simply must find one with aquarobics classes and lap swimming.
4) Going to trying setting goals and doing a little meditation and positive thinking! I really have developed some bad habits.

Didn't have time to write anything more yesterday, but now I have lots of time to make a really long post.
I try to explain how I'm going to get to my goal, but right away I'm having a bit difficulties with English words. There is this Finnish internet page where I signed up I don't know what to call it in English, but they have things to help lose weight. There are different diet options to choose from. I chose just a normal diet. Then it counts from my choices and other information I provided how much calories I can eat daily and also what percentages of different things I should have in my food. It has food and exercise diaries. The food database seems to be very extensive. It sets very clear goals to me everyday. So I try to reach the calorie, percentage, vegetable, fiber, water and exercise goals set there everyday and report to you. Yesterday the calorie, water and exercise goals weren't difficult, but didn't reach the others. If someone is looking for diet options and finds similar service in English I think it could be a very good choice. To me it seems the program is trying to teach me how to eat healthy in a way that is very clear doesn't need any reading and counting things myself.
Checking in__ Jablea (goal 15, thisweek 0, total 0)
Jojo, I wish I could still play sports. Becoming an old mother put the end to a lot of my activities and I couldn’t jog to save my life but I’m looking forward to cheering you on for a half marathon.
I hope you are still able to do some exercise. I'm unable to do some of my old hobbies too because I've lost so much muscle and endurance. Right now there would be a risk of serious injury if I tried. And as time has gone by I have started to miss my hobbies more and more. I used to do some martial arts that stopped when I moved away from my home town and started at university. I think I'm going to need a lot of cheering at some point to reach the half marathon goal right now it seems very far away. I hope that when I lose weight it becomes a bit easier.
I think we're all going for the realistic maximum (25lbs, 11 Kilos) for the time period. Would you guys want to be the 25 Club?
[/b] We may want to check in more often because it will really take consistency to achieve this - BUT IT IS POSSIBLE.
Irish - You may fit in here, too. I don't know your timing expectations.
Anyone else as well.
Not an exclusive club other than needing more encouragement - so all cheerleading welcome!
Here's an easy Kilo converter but you Finn's that sauna naked with your family may not ever let yourself go that far. One more benefit of sauna maybe?? 8-)
[/quote]
Count me in. I'll try to post daily I'll try to send lots of Finnish sisu to all of you. Unfortunately the sauna doesn't work that way at least it never has for me. :(
I got a gift today when I went to see my doctor for my six-month check up. I weighed 3 lbs. less than I weighed on my scales yesterday. I think I will use that weight when I check my weight on Monday. I still have 50 lbs to lose. 25 by March would be a godsend but I don't think that will happen. I told my doctor about going to bed after exercising yesterday and she said to start walking for five minutes a day for a week and then increase minutes by 5 every week. She thinks I better realize I am not 30 years old anymore when I did aerobics everyday for an hour. She thinks I may have bursitis in my shoulders and wants me to go to an ortho doctor for x-rays. This getting old is for the birds. Anyway, here is my diet for today:
Same breakfast as yesterday. 1 cup coffee. 16 oz bottle of water
Lunch: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 egg, 1 slice whole wheat toast, 8oz green tea (I use olive oil spray in my pans, no butter)
Dinner: 6 oz. of fish, baked or broiled, no butter. Rice 1/2 cup (brown or white) two vegetables (1/2 cup)..broccoli and yellow squash. 3 orange slices
Snack: Small tossed salad (2 tbs. diet dressing) and 1/2 Apple
The fish I am eating tonight is shrimp. I marinated in lemon juice, fresh garlic, parsley, butter buds) I will let you know how it turns out. Will put it on skewers and grill outside.
I think I will count my trip to the doctor as walking for 5 minutes. I feel exhausted already.
I will check in tomorrow. Love this site. If anyone is interested, my diet is a 1200 calorie-a-day diet. It is suppose to get your metabolism working again.

Did pretty well yesterday. I'm doing low carbs and not worrying too much about fats at the beginning. If all goes well, I'll cut down the fats when my weight loss slows down/stalls. Stayed totally on plan yesterday and wasn't even hungry but WOKE UP STARVING. ::)
Didn't walk as planned because I spent all afternoon taking the finish off some bedroom furniture with my granddaughter (listening to music-BTIKM). I figured that was a lot more exercise than usual and enough for the first day. My arms are already feeling VERY sore.

OK...long post....
I'm a pretty much a professional yo-yo dieter. I'm great at taking off weight when I put my mind to it. I'll go a year or two at an acceptable weight. But when RL throws me a curve, I get in the "I don't give a fuck" mindset. Emotional eating is what I really need to conquer!
How I lose weight: I count calories. Over the years, I've done every 'diet' out there. What they all pretty much do is give me a way to consume fewer calories than I expend. What works best for me is simply counting the calories. I get to eat what I want ..... in moderation.
The biggest thing I do to help myself stay on track is to establish a AVERAGE calorie range for a week. I consume 1200-1500 calories per day on average for a week. (usually closer to the 1500 end) That way, when I have a high calorie day, I don't go "oh, I blew it...guess I'll give up". Instead, I look at where I'm at on my average for the week and I go "ok, not too bad...if I stay at the low end of my range for a few days I'll be good". It lets me have those bad days and not mess up my mindset...or my overall caloric intake.
As I've gotten older, I've also realized how important exercise is. I'm much less active than I used to be. Muscle tone would be non-exixtent if I didn't make the effort to exercise. And my heart (and whole body) really needs for me to do the aerobics. Unfortunately, I only exercise when I'm really making the effort to either lose weight, or keep it off.
Lifestyle change is what I really need. I'm working on it. I've done it in the past for a couple of years at at time. With my yo-yo history, I have no real anticipation of succeeding in long term fitness. But maybe I can make that yo-yo have a shorter string!
BTW: Thank you for starting this challenge and giving me the UPMH I needed to try and get back on track!

I actually exercised yesterday. This is unheard of!! Wouldn't have happened without the inspiration from here.
Had been trying to figure out what exercise will work for me; if I have to go out in the cold/rain or go to a gym I probably won't do it.
So I found a "Walking at Home" video at www.startwalkingnow.org/res_exercisetv.jsp Need to start off slowly since I'm not in great condition and not so young, but I think this kind of thing might be good.
Also tried the "Cardio Dance" exercise on TV in Comcast's On Demand fitness programs. It's good too because trying to learn the dance steps makes it more challenging and fun.

blueberry: A tech question. When I post, I'm stuck in BB Code, can't get back to Preview. Any ideas? I have Preview as default in my profile, but that doesn't help.

Q3: blueberry. there should be a two labels on tabs at the bottom of the REPLY box -- one labeled Preview and one labeled BBCode. Can you see these or are they gone?
May 19, 2013 2:08:40 GMT -5
blueberry: Q3, I can still see the labels, but when I click on the Preview label, nothing happens. And every time I start a new post, it automatically takes me to BB Code. Otherwise it doesn't matter, but posting pictures would be easier in Preview (copy+paste).
