Glam superstar and former runner-up of CTV’s “American Idol,” Adam Lambert, sat down with Marilyn Denis to discuss his new number one album. After a year and a half of working on “Trespassing” he can finally say, “I feel good. I feel accomplished. I feel like my fans got what they deserve.”
Even his family members are proud. “I think my father was like, ‘Thank god I don’t have to worry about your financial situation anymore,’” Lambert jokes.
Many artists find it hard to match the success of their first album. For Lambert, a second album meant being the executive producer, writing most of the songs, and collaborating with musicians such as Pharrell Williams and Bruno Mars. ”I obsessed like crazy over it.” But all this work was really for the fans, “I worked really hard for them,” he says.
The album almost has two sides to it. “The first half is living your life like you want to be. Being who you want to be. Being proud of yourself, being different, marching forward, not letting anyone stand in your way.” The second part is what lies beneath that confidence. “We all have faults, and what I wanted the album to reveal is behind all that peacocking, swag and pride, I’m just like everybody else. “
He admits he has a laundry list of insecurities and that he has had to deal with overcoming obstacles and challenges. Not only is his album number one, but he is also the first openly gay artist to debut at number one. “It’s a cool milestone. I think what it proves is that music doesn’t have an orientation.”
He wants people to view this as an example of moving past the stereotyping. “I was really lucky to get on Idol and to have such a beautiful experience on the show, and after the show it’s a whole other set of challenges. Making it onto the real music industry out of a competition show is a big jump.” He reveals that he still keeps in touch with some of the Idol cast. To him American Idol is almost like high school where everyone goes on their own path, “I want to do a big reunion one of these days with them.”
Through the seasons of “American Idol” many of the runners-up have become bigger stars then the winners. When asked about this Lambert responds, “Kelly won. Carrie won. They are the two most successful ones. I think at the end of the day, it’s a case-by-case thing. “ For him success is based on what the competitors do with their newfound fame after the show.
He certainly seems to be handling his success well. This summer he will perform with Queen across Europe.

Last week Adam Lambert became the first openly gay male artist to score the top spot on Billboard's album chart after his new record, Trespassing, sold 77,000 copies during its first week. Lambert recently sat down with Rolling Stone to chat about the darker subject matter on Tresspassing, teaming up with Pharrell and their long chats about life and music, and how working with various producers allowed Lambert to create a record that, as he put it, "represented all of me."
Be sure to check out the dystopic new clip for Trespassing's second single, "Never Close Our Eyes."

The Edge FM NZ: Adam Lambert Interview with Brad & Marty YouTube AUDIO
Adam Lambert Interview with Brad & Marty on The Edge FM New AUDIO Published on May 28, 2012 by EdgeNightshow | 10:26 min Adam talks about his new album, massaging John Travolta, Kimbra and more... This is the full RAW interview unedited. @bradwatsonnz @marty_nz
Adam Mitchell Lambert is a bit of a phenomenon. For those here in the UK who plugged into what could possibly be the finest debut album, For Your Entertainment, we already know what this man is capable of doing. A vocal range that is simply stunning, an attitude (the man is gay and makes sure everybody knows it) that is perfectly thrilling, sold out stage shows and looks that any catwalk model would simply die for… oh yes, Adam Lambert has it all… and then some. Not bad for a man who was only the runner up on American Idol.
You’re a very fashionable chap so how important do you think the link is between fashion and music?
Why thank you! I don’t think one NEEDS the other but when fashion and music are combined it becomes a stronger representation of one’s lifestyle and general outlook. I think they definitely influence each other.
Do you have a designer who creates your look or is it all you?
I make final decisions and dress myself often but I also work with stylists that help pull things and suggest pieces and combinations. I have a few favourite designers whose collections inspire my style.
His second studio album, Trespassing, has been a while in coming. With an original release date of March, the disc was delayed as he said he wanted more remixes and include new collaborations. For the album he teamed up with a host of songwriters and producers including Pharrell Williams, Claude Kelly, Benny Blanco and Sam Sparro. The fact that he released a brilliant single from the album,’ Better Than I Know Myself’, earlier in the year only added to the clamouring expectations for what is to come and what we could expect.
“Trespassing” took over a year to create. I wrote on many of the songs and I’m excited to drop it later this spring. It’s a different sound than the last album. Lots of electronic dance funk and darker synth pop sounds are used to convey my personality. The songs are auto-biographical and very honest. Even though the material is very personal, I hope almost anyone will be able to relate to it. I think all human beings want the same things out of life. We want happiness, love, attention, sex, and FUN.
Since American Idol you seem to be in the gossip columns all the time… are you just playing a part or are the paparazzi getting to you?
I think true art and those who create it should inspire conversation. If there’s interest I hope it’s because people find me interesting. Gossip comes with the territory called Celebrity I guess.
When you are back home where do you hang out and who with?
I hang at home a lot. I invite friends over or meet them out for dinners occasionally. My boyfriend and I go to the movies a lot. I’m pretty normal…
Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?
My boyfriend!
What is your guilty pleasure?
Dark Chocolate. And Gossip Girl.
Away from music what do you like to do?
Shop. I have a fashion addiction…
‘Never Close Our Eyes’ – is the second single release and was written by Bruno Mars and produced by Dr Luke, will be available to download from 24th June, while the album ‘Trespassing’ will follow on 2nd July.
Adam auditioned for American Idol by singing a selection of Queen songs. His theatricality and superb vocals were obviously likened to his music hero Freddie Mercury, which came to a brilliant and show-stopping conclusion when he joined members of Queen for the series final singing We Are The Champions. Since then, Adam has been continuously linked with the band, many gossip columns and music journalists thinking he would be a natural replacement for Freddie.
All this came to a head when earlier this year it was announced that a version of Queen fronted by Adam would perform at the Sonisphere festival in Knebworth and a show in Moscow. Adam said of this liaison: “I will be their guest as lead singer this summer… two very special nights that I’m honoured to be a part of.” Unfortunately, according to organizers, plans for the event in England in July were scrapped due to unforeseen difficulties. Adam later tweeted his fans: “While I’m sad that the Sonisphere festival has been cancelled, I’m hopeful that Queen and I will share a stage again someday in the future.”
Almost immediately there was frenzied activity to make this happen so Adam and Queen are set to perform three shows on 11,12 & 14 July at the Hammersmith, London. The tickets sold out in a matter of moment when they went on sale.

Riding high on the success of his latest album Trespassing, Adam Lambert continues to claim his rightful place atop the pop world this week with the release of his official video for “Never Close Our Eyes.” The clip, which can be found below, borrows heavily from the story and ideals of Orwell’s classic novel, 1984, and features Lambert fighting for a free society.
If you somehow slept on Trespass and/or foolishly wrote Lambert off in the past, I cannot encourage you enough to give his latest material a spin. I have no doubts this album will be near the top of our Best of 2012 list, and if give it a chance, it’ll likely top yours as well.

Just a Thought... What is success? It is a toy balloon among children armed with pins. [Gene Fowler]
Well, wasn't that a nice surprise!
Mike and I arose from our naps, put on our work faces again and headed back to our CHFI studios for 5 pm yesterday - all worth it for the chance to chat with multiple album seller (and 8th season runner-up on American Idol) Adam Lambert.
What a truly lovely guy. Sincere, frank, friendly and chatty, we talked about everything from being a rock star (he says he doesn't have that much money!) to what drove him to try out for Idol, to the twin joys/burdens of being somewhat of a banner bearer for gay artists. As he says, he doesn't always lead an exemplary life, but he is proud of the position he holds. And he wears it well.
Tall - 6' 1" - slim and reallllly handsome, Adam sports a killer coif, tasteful and chunky jewellery, greenish silver nail polish and an air of grace, style and confidence. Yes, he even smells good! Before the interview began, I asked what it was he was wearing (lovely tones of patchouli, which I find draws me in like a cartoon of a baking pie on a window sill) and he told me Loree Rodkin's Gothic I (as in "one"). It's yummy - or is it the man who makes the scent? Anyway, that's the insider scoop for Lambert fans! Not usually the kind of question I like to ask when we have a limited amount of time, but I had to; even Wikipedia had him as wearing Joop!, which he may well have been, but not yesterday. Did I tell you about his beautiful blue eyes (framed perfectly with dark lashes and sculpted brows)? The man is easy on the eyes, I'll tell you what.
His new album Trespassing sold 78,000 copies in the US, about 7300 in Canada its first week, and he's hoping to have as many hits from it as he did his debut CD For Your Entertainment. He's certainly hard working and deserves the success he's enjoyed, and which will undoubtedly continue to flow his way.
Adam will be singing this summer with Queen's surviving members in the UK and Europe and while his dream duet would be with the late Freddie Mercury, he didn't rule out teaming up with any of the current pop princesses dominating the charts these days. The future? He hopes always to be creating. And I can't disagree with that intention - for him, for us all. I hope you'll tune in after 8 am to hear our chat with Adam (and we'll rerun it on the weekend). In the meantime, there's a whole lot of funk to Trespassing, a lot of hot collaborations - he wouldn't come out and say whether he or Bruno Mars has the better hair - and music that Adam wrote and produced with fans' reactions at concerts in mind.
Hope you enjoy it. And we honestly do wish Adam every success. He's working hard, he's insanely talented and he deserves it all. What do we want from you, Adam? As much as you'll give. That'll be just fine.

With album sales dwindling on both sides of the Atlantic it's becoming increasingly important to get the first single right, no matter who you are or how successful you've been. When Beyoncé's Run the World (Girls) limped into the top 30 in America prior to her album 4 rumours started circulating that the LP would be delayed, while Christina Aguilera's Not Myself Tonight did so badly many people didn't even know that its parent album, Bionic, even existed. Late last year former American Idol runner-up and future (temporary) Queen frontman Adam Lambert chose the gloomy emo-ballad Better Than I Know Myself as the lead single from his second album Trespassing, initially due for release in America this March. The single peaked at No 76, the album was delayed by two months and this Bruno Mars-penned, Dr Luke-produced banger was selected as the second single. Last week Trespassing became Lambert's first No 1 album and, unfathomably, the first US No 1 album ever by an openly gay artist. Never Close Our Eyes' task will be to try and maintain that success, which shouldn't be a problem given its fizzing synths, pounding beats and monstrous chorus all seem precision-tooled for playlist ubiquity. In the video, Lambert is trapped in an experimental facility that looks like a cross between the orphanage in Annie and Lady Gaga's Bad Romance video.
Remember the playground rhyme 'first's the worst, second's the best and third's the one with the hairy chest'?
Well, it might be making a comeback thanks to music talent shows on the telly.
American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert made history last week by becoming the first openly gay artist to achieve number one in the Billboard 200 album chart with his second studio release 'Trespassing'.
And today he's released the music video for his next single Never Close Our Eyes which features all of the trademark styles that Lambert is known for.
His spiky hair - fixed with Vo5 spray - and his unique emo style fit perfectly with the catchy tune that will undoubtedly continue his chart success.
The song is a bit of a sing-a-long while the video - where Lambert is trapped in an experimental facility and forced to chomp down on multi-coloured pills - has the style of Lady Gaga.
His album has already topped the US albums charts though it won’t be released in the UK until 2nd July.
Lambert told Instinct magazine: “As a community, we’re a little bit resistant to a gay male popstar ourselves.
"There’s something weird there. We’re very eager to celebrate a strong female. But to celebrate a fellow gay man – it gets catty sometimes."
Maybe contestants auditioning for the X Factor this year should try their best not to win the competition if they want to be rich and famous - and have a successful music career, obviously.
Matt Cardle won the competition in 2010 but parted ways with his record label last week after a very uneventful couple of years.
While third place One Direction, well, you know the story about their enormous worldwide success right?
Adam Lambert comes to the UK next week and will be performing alongside X Factor runners-up JLS at the Rays of Charity event at the Royal Albert Hall on 7th June and a solo gig at G-A-Y on 9th June.
The single Never Close Our Eyes is on sale 24th June.
Oh, and if any American Idol trivia buffs are reading then it was Kris Allen who won the show in 2009 and according to the rhyme it's third place Danny Gokey who has the hairy chest.
