I don't know if anyone else watched 'Breaking Pointe' a reality show on CW about a Salt Lake City Ballet Company. I loved it.
Anyway two of the cast were dating; Rex and Allison. Chokehold describes their relationship to perfection. Allison does not want to be committed and just uses Rex when it's convenient. Rex loves her deeply and wants to take the relationship further. He is very hurt by her behaviour but desperately wants to keep her.
If you would like to find out what happens watch the series.
This song has always been a favourite. I find it such a brave and sophisticated telling of the dangerous mix of sexual connection, yet emotional and spiritual disconnection with someone that literally chokes the life force and its higher expression out of you. Desire unmastered. Lesser self rules higher self.
This version is simply stunning. I didn't recognise what song it was at first. The introduction is so light and dreamy and the first verse is sung as a lullaby, like the lure of initial contact, unaware of what is to come, what unknown need in you is about to be expressed and unleashed. His lower register is so rich and ringing, in fact his whole body is vibrating with the feeling of the sound - not only in this song, but all of them performed that night.
It seems that without the use of driving guitars that are found on the recorded version, he uses his lower register in a similar way to energise and build the drama until finally all self-control is lost as he bursts into his upper register at the end and then retreats into himself at the end, exhausted from the futility of it all, still unable to escape, singing again as a lament. Knowing it will happen again. This is truly masterful performance. And then he dis-inhabits the story and smiles sweetly. How Adam. This man is only 30 years old!
