I've pondered why FYE hasn't reached platinum status in the states for a while and I was satisfied with "the industry is down as a whole" and "platinum isn't everything" answers but lately I've come to the conclusion that he hasn't achieved platinum because retailers simply DO NOT KEEP HIS MERCHANDISE IN STOCK (in certain regions/states). With previous posts of B&N selling out and limited supplies at Walmart/BB of GNL I have a strong hunch that retailers don't order any more copies than already provided. Also there's the Miranda Lambert debacle. I mean you'd expect the stockboy to notice the difference between Miranda and Adam Lambert yet he purposely places Adam in her slot.
Case in point:
I mean I doubt potential new fans of Adam would look in the country section of all places; behind Miranda's stuff. Sorry for venting in post-GNL release day. I guess it's been on my mind for a while now. www.downloademoticons.org/wp-content/uploads/yolks/ka boom.png
I'll go back to lurking mode. [/quote]
Actually, there may be many reasons for FYE not being platinum in the US but lack of retail outlets stocking the album is not a problem. It have been stocked at every Walmart*, Target* and Best Buy since it was released. Just in those chains it is in 6,000 retail doors and every market in the US. RCA also had it in Walgreens, CVS, and other retail locations for a total of over 20,000 more locations for the first 2 months. That is not counting B&N, Borders, and the smaller book and music specialty chains. There were no gaps in the US and no market without GNT. RCA did a great job distributing FYE to US Retail.
Finally, there are a lot of pictures of FYE with Miranda Lambert tags behind him, but many are Twitter jokes -- some are shopper pranks. I have no idea where the photo you attached was taken, but it is not a widespread problem -- really seems to be pranksters vs. store stocking issues.
My theory on the failure of FYE selling platinum in two parts.
1. It is hard to get a platinum album in the US now. What debuts have gone platinum in the US since 11/09 -- Kesha, Gaga, SuBo, Bieber, and maybe a few more. But rare considering how many albums are released in the US each year.
2. FYE is an album for Adam fans, but since it is multigenre it is not an album that would appeal to rock buyers or alt rock buyers or country buyers or pop/dance buyers or AC buyers etc. It was the right choice for Adam coming off of Idol because his fanbase is so diverse musically, but a difficult product marketing strategy. And the easiest way to expand your market in the US, it to "own" a genre. First albums are almost always mostly within one or two genres -- look at Gaga, Kesha, etc.
