Hmmm....
Guys - perhaps if you are going to comment on the OC article, more emphasis should be made on the amazingness of the performance...versus the slant of of the reviewer?

Your comments reminded me of the first time I attended a Johnny Mathis concert. Now I am not quite old enough to be in his fan base, I went to the show with my Mom . In any case his voice was great and he sung all of the songs he is famous for but the shocking thing was he said about 10 words over the course of the evening and most of them were "thank you". The man has been performing for over 40 years and he has never developed or maybe just never felt the need to work on his stage banter. I guess all artists have to play to their strengths and what they consider most importance to their performance.
Ha. I went to a Mathis concert a couple of months ago. I used to like him back in the day (and his voice is still stellar) but I was so BORED with the show. He said little and hardly moved. There was a total lack of energy. The audience sat until the standing ovation at the end. In the distant past I enjoyed shows like this. Not so much anymore. I find I need to jump or dance or move in SOME way when I'm at a live show. In spite of my advanced age.

Interesting comments today about the concert. Here's my 2c: 1. Re: comparing the band to the Queen band. I also think it's not only unfair, but almost impossible to compare. Like apples and oranges. Queen is a BAND; Adam is a solo artist with a back-up band. Queen plays rock music, where the instruments, and especially the guitar, are supposed to be front-and-center; Adam plays pop music, with funk and disco and some rock influences. May I remind you that most pop artists don't even have a full band. Some just have a backing track or a DJ. The band is just not that important in pop. And if anything, I think that Adam has an incredibly elevated level of live performances, for a POP performer. He really has a comparatively organic sound up there, and it's a real live jam. You should see Kesha or Rihanna or even Lady Gaga live. Also, while I appreciate the Queen concerts, I feel like Adam and Queen is a bit like going to the museum. It's a pretty cool, interactive museum, but it's still a museum. Watching Adam do his own music is very much ALIVE; I am looking forward to his evolution as a writer and performer; it's like being in the middle of a stream and you are getting carried away with it, and you don't know where it will go, but man, it's exciting. So for me, Adam needs to do his own thing. 2. Re: the energy at last night's show. I watched the videos and I was blown away, personally, by the level of energy and showmanship he showed. He was playful, interesting, endearing, funny, dance-y. It's hard for me to think of many other performers right now who are this good (and I'm not OTT, I think there ARE other performers out there who are this good or better, just not a lot of them . I was surprised to see a couple of people who thought he was "tired." I wonder if we're not getting spoiled a little with his phenomenal performances, and we are now judging Adam using a totally different scale. Of course, YMMV, etc etc so I'm not telling you what to think in any way, just wanted to share my experience of watching the videos (and I wasn't even there). Lifetraveler, I sooo agree with all of this. Queen music allows for extended solos for guitar, in particular, and is a different beast altogether. Plus, Adam's band are all fairly young performers--isn't he the oldest? I also thought his energy was lovely. So relaxed and playful. I don't get the low energy comments, but I'm often oblivious to things like that. Maybe we are the ones who are low on energy. Stanning has been really time consuming lately. ;D ;D It is very difficult to judge the balance of the instruments and singers from home movies (basically). On Suz's videos, I hear very loud guitar that mostly comes through my left headphone. However, Cos2mwiz's seem more balanced and Adam is more prominent. You might check those out if that is what you prefer. Regarding background singers, I agree with Glampoon on the specific pitch issue in Naked Love. I don't know who sings which part, but there has consistently been and issue on the "ooooh oooh ooohs". However, I'm not hearing pitch issues or unpleasantness throughout that some Atops are hearing. Also, may I say how lovely it is here today to read different opinions about the performance. The likes and dislikes are as varied as we are as people. We are all huge fans with tastes and sensibilities that run the gamut. Even when I disagree with someone, I'm still better off for knowing their thoughts. Can you even imagine the biggest sports fans reviewing or watching a game without rejoicing sometimes or saying So & So was not having his best game? Sports fans rag on their icons all the time. It doesn't mean they appreciate their idols less.
