In the beginning there was Adam. Soon after, there was Citizen Vein.
The not so brief history of the Paramount Sessions
3.27.11 by Q3 (Updated to correct 2 dates)
The punchline for people who do not want to read this whole thing
Adam and Monte own the publishing rights to the songs they co-wrote during the Citizen Vein era. Hi-Fi Recordings appears to own the recording session tapes from the Citizen Vein Paramount sessions which they purchased from Wilshire Records. These recordings were on the “One with the Show” unauthorized album tracklist in June 2009 and in Fall 2010 on the tracklist for the announced but unreleased unauthorized album, “Take Two”.
The cast
Adam Lambert: rising international pop star, singer-songwriter extraordinaire.
Monte Pittman: lead guitarist for Madonna, Prong, and Adam Lambert.
Wilshire Records and Welsford Music: independent record companies owned and operated by Malcolm Welsford, a New Zealand record producer who relocated to Los Angeles. welsfordmusic.com/site/?page_id=246
Malcolm Welsford: worked with Adam for 3 years; produced the songs on Take One the unauthorized album released by Rufftown Records. Welsford also produced several un-released tracks which Adam Lambert penned with Guitarist Monte Pittman.
M22 Publishing: a publishing (song/music) administration company operated by Malcolm Welsford.
Hi-Fi Records: An independent record label. The Wiki description, “Hi Fi Recordings is a record label based in New York which first gained attention in June 2009 when it announced that it would release Adam Lambert's debut album, to be called On with the Show.[1] Hi Fi had previously released American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle's debut CD, Coming Back to You, as well as Todd Rundgren's Arena. The label also has veteran acts such as Dionne Warwick, Smash Mouth, and Donny & Marie Osmond signed.”
John Hecker: Chairman of Hi-Fi Records. Hecker is also listed as the chairman/CEO of the Music Publishing Company of America.
John Titta: President and COO or Hi-Fi Records
The key events
December 15, 2004: Adam and Monte meet at the Zodiac Show; Monte accompanies Adam’s performance of “A Change is Gonna Come”.
2005: Adam is hired by Malcolm Welford as a session musician to record vocals for some demo songs.
2005 Citizen Vein formed: Monte had been looking for a frontman for his band and had heard about Adam. After they met at the Zodiac Club, Adam and Monte joined to form the alt/rock band The Citizen Vein. The band consisted of singer/songwriter Adam Lambert, Composer/Guitarist Monte Pittman (Madonna, Prong), bass player Tommy Victor, and drummer Steve Sidelnyk .
Monte explains how the band was formed “This Was The Citizen Vein”
2005: Citizen Vein began working with Producer Malcolm Welsford and A&R Worldwide, recording a series of songs. They worked with Malcolm for almost 3 years.
May (? date unknown) 2009: Malcolm Welsford sells his unreleased Adam Lambert recordings to Hi-Fi Records. Details of the deal were never disclosed.
Wednesday June 24, 2009: Hi Fi Recordings rep told Usmagazine.com "The songs were recorded in a professional recording studio with top notch musicians and producers since the music was always meant to be released. Of the 11 songs that will appear on the album, On With the Show, Adam co-wrote eight with Monte Pittman (Madonna’s guitar player). As co-writer and performer, Adam will receive significant royalties just as any superstar artist would.”
Hi Fi: "As a co-writer and performer, Adam will receive significant royalties, just as any superstar artist would," the statement read in part. "He has the chance, finally, to make a fortune for his work — definitely more with this album than through a major-label deal."
Adam Lambert swears his involvement with On With the Show, the album of songs he recorded before he rose to "American Idol" fame, was strictly limited to being "hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else." New documents may prove that claim to be wrong.
Thursday June 25, 2009: TMZ releases a Memo dated Tuesday June 23, 2009 listing “On With The Show” Album tracks.
The letter, sent by John Titta and addressed to John Hecker (a Hi-Fi internal memo) indicates that the album was due to be released during the summer 2009. And memo included the tracklist for “On With The Show” which was comprised of old recordings made and written by Adam Lambert and Monte Lee Pittman:
1. Beg For Mercy

2. Crawl Thru Fire
Adam Lambert 50%, Monte Lee Pitman 50%
3. Want

10. The Circle

11. mp3 Killed The Record Companies

Later in the day Adam Lambert released another statement responding to the “leaked” internal Hi Fi Records memo.
"I was shocked to learn that songwriting demos of songs that I co-wrote and recorded over the past few years may be released in an album. Like a rough draft that a writer does before finishing a book, I did not intend my work on these demos to be heard by the public. I was unaware that anyone intended to release these recordings until I heard about it in the press, and I'm very disappointed by this entire situation."
Friday June 26, 2009: Hi Fi Recordings responded to Adam Lambert's statement.
"As we've already outlined, releasing this music was always the plan. That plan was changed by Nineteen Recordings after Adam won America over with his extaordinary talent. It's a shame that his management/record company choose to disavow their clients work and discredit him as a songwriter. ... We apologize for what has become a tiresome tit for tat, particularly on a day that we mourn the loss of a truly original, game-changing entertainer - but unfortunately, each statement released in Adam's name contains a different story."
November 17, 2009: “Take One” an album containing many of Adam’s early demo session recordings was released by Hi-Fi Records on their Rufftown Label. The album did not contain any of the Lambert-Pitman recordings.
August, 2010: “Take Two” listed on many online website for sale with the following info:
Category Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs
Label Rufftown
Release Date Nov 30, 2010
Late October 2010: “Take Two” was removed from most online sites or listed as “no longer available”. The main exception is Walmart.com which appeared to have not properly updated this listing on their site.

How can “they” release this unauthorized album? And what will Adam make if it is ever released?
There are two different types of recordings involved. The first type are recordings where Adam was hired as a session musician to record another songwriter’s work. He was paid to sing and has no ownership rights. These are the recordings that are on “Take One”.
The other recordings are more important, these are the Citizen Vein Paramount recording sessions. Based on the Music Publishing Company of America June 23, 2009 memo, Adam co-wrote the majority of the songs with Monte Pittman (one track, "Kiss and Tell," was co-written by him and electronic musician Kiril Dzajkovski) and Adam would receive publishing royalties for any public performance (TV, radio, in clubs, etc.) or any copies of On With the Show that are manufactured and distributed (a so-called "Mechanical License").
Tracks like "Crawl Thru Fire" and "Kiss and Tell" are registered with ASCAP, and the organization lists Lambert as the co-writer, along with Pittman and Dzajkovski, respectively. None of the other songs mentioned in the memo can be found in ASCAP's database, although a spokesperson for Hi Fi told MTV News in June 2009 that "the paperwork for the remainder of the songs is in the process of being filed [with the organization] ... and it's typical for tracks not to be registered until the product goes to the marketplace." Lambert is also listed as the performer on a handful of other tracks — "I Got This," "Pop Goes the Camera" and "Sacrifice" — all co-written by Adam and Pittman, which seems to back up Hi Fi's and Wilshire Records' earlier statement that Lambert recorded "more than two albums' worth of material ... over the course of three-year relationship with Wilshire."
Why does this matter?
Adam clearly does not want this earlier work released, but many Adam fans are interested in hearing and owning the Citizen Vein studio recordings. For now, however, fans will just have to settle for the YouTube versions. Here is a sample of the songs:

My message to Adam
You're established now. Your fans know that these early recordings do not reflect who you are. Trust us. Let someone release the Paramount sessions. They cannot hurt you and will make some fans very happy. I am sure the studio recordings are betterer than the scratchy, Low-Def live YouTube version many fans are listening to now.
(And they really must be better than those demos released on "Take One".)
Apples and Oranges and Adam, Oh My!
3/27/11 by NoAngel
This essay is not about whether Adam Lambert’s AMA performance is related to Chris Brown’s meltdown during his GMA interview, nor why ABC sucks for censuring Adam after his performance or why they suck for fawning all over Chris Brown. It is not about whether ABC’s freakout was over The Kiss or The Trolley Stop or The Crotch Snorkel, or all of the above. It is not about what it says about American society that some are more shocked about gay sexuality than about violence. And it is absolutely NOT about whether Adam should or shouldn’t do this, that, or the other thing in terms of his own activism.
As I’ve eavesdropped on conversations around the fandom this week, there are differences of opinion on all of the above. And like many of you, I’ve agreed with some, disagreed with others, and have had my opinion modified by hearing a well-articulated argument. But the occasional Twitter-rant aside, what is remarkable to me is that there is a conversation going on, amongst people from all over the world, from all walks of life, of all ages and persuasions, many of whom have never laid eyes on each other. Conversations about things that matter.
So yeah, maybe comparing [insert Adam-related issue here] with [insert social issue of your choice here] is like comparing apples and oranges. But sometimes it’s totally legit to compare. At first glance, maybe the response to Adam’s AMA performance has little to do with the response to the Chris Brown incident. But apples and oranges are both types of fruit, and society’s responses to sexuality and to violence both reflect social values and mores. An awareness of one can lead to increased awareness of the other.
I’ve heard some people scornfully point out that many Adam fans didn’t give a crap about gay rights until he came along. Perhaps so. But a new advocate is no less an important ally for a cause than someone who has fought for years.
I have no problem with people learning as they go along, educating themselves on new issues, and acting in whatever way feels right to them. A few quiet words at the lunch table can be just as powerful as picketing on Capitol Hill. And it is okay if your fandom expands your worldview and your compassion, as well as your righteous outrage. Since forever, it has been often been the “ordinary” folks who initiate social change. People who would have been content to just live their lives until something became too horrible to tolerate; until someone they loved was hurt; until they could no longer look away.
We credit Adam for lots of things—for adding fun and adventure to our lives and glitter to our wardrobes. Why are we hesitant to attribute being his fan to raising our awareness of the world around us? Is there some guilt at having been passive, or at having been too busy with our own lives to pay close attention to the world around us?
I credit the connections I’ve made in this fandom with opening up my eyes to all kinds of new things, some wonderful; some awful. Some of us are long-time activists who have found fresh energy. Others had laid aside their placards and pens, and have happily picked them up again. Still others are finding their voice and their cause for the first time. In my mind, we all have cred, and we all have a role.
Just like the rest of us, I’m here for the music. But I’m also open to learning and growing, and maybe, in some small way, making a difference. I came for the apples, but I’m realizing that the oranges are pretty interesting, too, and so is everything else that grows on the tree of knowledge.
