Yeah, I know. But it's not unheard of, a Yakuza member can mistake a tourist tattoo with a Yakuza tattoo. It has happened. That's why you can't show your tattoos at public saunas, pools or gyms, even if you don't have Yakuza imagery on them. So that's why Sauli had problems with his tattoos in Japan. He didn't know that. He told about it in Tutka: K: Tell us something more about Osaka. What was up in there? S: It was nice, I spent only two days there. One thing that disappointed me in Osaka was that I was about to go to a gym there and I wasn’t allowed in there because… I don’t know, I guess I had this same sleeveless top on… but because I have these tattoos. K: What??? S: Yeah, I didn’t. I should have hidden them under a tape or put on a shirt with long sleeves. K: No!!! S: And because I had already walked 15 minutes to get to that gym, I didn’t have time to go and get anything with long sleeves from the hotel room because I was in a rush anyway,… and besides, the only things with long sleeves I had there in the hotel room were a suit jacket, leather jacket or a bathrobe… so I don’t know which one I would have worn at the gym while running. K: (laughs) S: Yeah, that was the really only thing that annoyed me in Tokyo [Osaka?] or in Japan, but otherwise the trip was really awesome. K: Oh, wow. S: But they have this custom there that you can’t go to any public places, like pools or anything if you have tattoos. They think you are a gangster K: You must be kidding! S: Yes, they do! K: Oh well, you really are such a gangster, I wouldn’t let you in any gym, either! Read more: www.adamtopia.com/index.cgi?board=sauli&action=display&thread=630&page=2#ixzz26D6LQsuVI wanted to jump in here cause there seems to be a bit of a misunderstand going on here. I am no tattoo/yakuza expert, but having lived in Japan while growing up, I think I can explain some things here. Until fairly recently, almost all tattoo engravings were always associated with Yakuza in Japan. Many members of the Yakuza would have very elaborate designs (very specific style called WABORI). Yes, different families have crests (MON). However, as far as I know, Japanese Yakuzas do not have designs that indicate affiliation. Also, I have never heard of Yakuzas mistaking tourists with a tattoo as Yakuzas. I really doubt that any Yakuza would think that a blue eyed blond would be a part of any Yakuza family. Generally speaking, Japanese do not like direct confrontation. So a way for many proprietors to say "not welcome" to the Yakuza was to say "no tattoos". I guess, despite the fact that tattoos are much more widespread in Japan, many establishments still have that rule. Also, because of the history of tattoo, there are many Japanese who do not look favorable towards any form of tattoo - just isn't seen as cool, in particular with the older generation.
