I'm a young male actor who just arrived in NYC. I'm ready to start auditioining for musicals, but I need some help with my book. Any suggestions? I'm mostly looking for pop tenor stuff. Thanks!!

I think I can lend some aid, AG, but first let's bring any non-actors out there up to speed: the "book" AG is referring to is industry-speak for the collection of songs he uses to audition, usually with cuts already made to the sheet music. (Most audition panels, especially ones where they're seeing a hundred-plus people, want sixteen bars and nothing more.)
It's been about two years since I went on my last actual audition before comitting to being a writer full-time, so I asked my boyfriend Morris, also an actor in NYC, how he would advise you.
"If he's really a pop tenor, tell him to learn a pop song that tells a story," Morris says, while refilling my wine glass with his right hand and feeding me grapes with his left. "Actually, Ben Folds is a good place to start. He should have some traditional and contemporary musical theater songs, too, but a lot of auditions have asked me to sing pop songs."
I agree about Ben Folds, and I'd say "Zak and Sara" is a good starting point. I'd add that if you can pull off rock, Adam Lambert's catalogue is a gold mine.
