I wonder why the hits to trespassing the lyric video are not higher.. I've been hitting it up all day and I'm sure others are keeping it going ..WEIRD YouTube does not count most of the multiple views in the counter from the same IP address. So lots of plays by the same person, do very little good. The YouTube counter is managed to show popularity and they know how to idea spam-plays intended to distort the popularity. Just like iTunes does not count more than about 7 sales to one account in its counter. They want to show what is popular. So if I gift 20 copies of Trespassing to friends, they will only count 7 or so of those sales? Will all get counted if I gift 7 copies (to different people) per day for several days?

If I remember correctly, wasn't there a post back around the time the BTIKM video came out that explained that YouTube did not count video plays repeated too frequently from the same computer (or maybe it is computer+browser that counts, don't know). Also, I think it was also said that YouTube doesn't count video plays that are stopped too soon. If this is correct, than the 40 repeat loops will only count as 1 play. Yes, that is correct. You have to watch most of the video for it to count. And changing browsers does not seem to help, repetitive views that are too frequent do not count. Most fan attempts to manipulate counts -- sales, radio requests, YouTube, Google Trends, Twitter Trends, do not work. So playing that 40 in a row video loop has been a waste of time, drat! I made a play list on Rhapsody which plays the trespassing tract about 15 times in a row. Am I spinning my wheels again or is each play going to count?

The issues with the board is not related to browser -- it was a server issue that is now resolved -- I believe.
OK then! Thanks for clarifying, Q3.

So if I gift 20 copies of Trespassing to friends, they will only count 7 or so of those sales? Will all get counted if I gift 7 copies (to different people) per day for several days? No one knows the iTunes rules beyond some general things -- it is a weighted average over a very long time period -- seems like 48 hours. In addition, it is based on more than sales. Here is a interesting analysis: www.gareth53.co.uk/blog/2009/10/how-itunes-charts-work.htmlBillboard/Soundscan is a different matter. The Soundscan rule is the delete all non-normal retail sales. 20 gift from one account would certainly be considered not normal. The rules change all the time and are not published. SoundScan employs bulk-buying detection for both digital and physical sales. In 2008, in Fred Bronson's column, Geoff Mayfield (former charts Director at Billboard) indicated that the maximum that can be purchased in any single transaction is 8-10 copies. Anything more is considered an attempt to manipulate the sales charts. Both iTunes and Billboard work hard to detect and eliminate fan bulk buying from their charts. So if you want to gift Trespassing to spread the great music, go ahead. But if you want to manipulate the charts, probably best to just buy and gift a few tracks.
