Six ways to help make Trespassing a hit

Over the past several weeks, there has been a lot of fan discussion about the best way to help Trespassing become a hit. Some fans have planned, a few have worried, many have spent countless hours requesting, but almost all fans have been unified in supporting the selection of Trespassing. It is great to have a single that we love and that was co-written by Adam sent to radio. Now, I want to help that single become the hit it deserves to be.

What make a song a hit? Usually a hit is defined by a song being high on the “charts”. There are currently three important singles charts in the US:

• iTunes, a rolling sales chart that influences some radio airplay decisions. Although it can matter, even a high chart placement does not mean a song will be played. Only the main singles chart matters for Mainstream Top 40 radio stations so ignore the “Pop” genre chart. It takes a very large number of purchases to push a track into the Top 10 tracks on iTunes and the chart placement needs to be sustained for a least a day or two. If fans can push the track into the Top 40 tracks it may be enough – and IMO that will be challenging.

• Mediabase Top 40 Radio Airplay, the most important airplay chart for mainstream pop hits, it is comprised of the past 7 days total airplay from 157 Top 40/CHR (Contemporary Hits Radio) stations in the US.

• Billboard Hot 100, the main singles chart in the US. It is comprised of Radio Audience Impressions (50%), Single Sales (35%) and Online Music streaming + VEVO streaming (roughly 10% music streaming and 5% VEVO). The change in the composition means that sales matter less than before and online play matters more.

Just for perspective, iTunes has about 70% share of US music sales and is therefore 25% of the Billboard Hot 100. It matters more than any radio station and more than all of streaming media combined.

There is one more important chart – the album sales chart, Billboard 200. This is a simple chart of albums ranked by the previously week’s retail sales.

So what fans can do? Just sit back and watch. Well yes, that can help. (Not so clever transition to #1.)

TIPS: Play the whole video then close your browser window, do not put it on replay. Repeat up to once an hour. The counter is NOT a real time counter and will not change immediately.

2. Play Trespassing Since March 2012, Billboard has included on-demand play request and plays from unlimited listener-controlled radio channels on MOG, Muve Music, Rdio, Rhapsody, Slacker, Sony Music Unlimited, Spotify and Zune in the Hot 100.

3. RADIO Request, request, request The most important thing right now is radio airplay. This is going to take a long time. So be patient, smile, and say thank you. Focus on stations that have added Trespassing and on request shows. More info below.

4. Reviews & Ratings When the EP is released – review and rate the EP and tracks on Amazon and iTunes and other sites.

5. Buy Trespassing (Radio Edit) There are two reasons to buy Trespassing tracks.

The first goal is to get Trespassing into the Top 40 tracks on the US iTunes singles chart to influence radio PDs and MDs to add the song to their playlist. This will be very difficult to accomplish but is possible. In order to move the track up the iTunes chart, it is important that fans all buy the same track, the Trespassing Radio Edit. This is also being referred to as the “Pharrell Track”. The track to buy is Track 2. “Trespassing (Radio Edit)”.

My recommendation is DO NOT race out and buy and gift the Trespassing EP the minute it is available on iTunes. It is best to purchase a track once it is in the top 200 or so and has some momentum. Some fan groups recommend waiting until a song is in the top 100 tracks.

The second reason to buy Trespassing (track) is to get the song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Since Radio is 50% of the chart points, wait until the song has some radio airplay which will not happen soon. Then you can buy and gift all 4 tracks on iTunes or Amazon and they will all be counted as Trespassing and help Trespassing chart.



TIPS: Do not buy the EP from iTunes if you want to buy the track from iTunes. Do not gift the track outside of the US if you want it to count for Billboard. 6. Help Trespassing EP make the Billboard 200

The final way to demonstrate that Trespassing is a hit is to help the EP make the Billboard 200. It will only take a few thousand units to get Trespassing on the Billboard 200. So, if you can afford it, consider gifting a few copies of Trespassing during release week.

My recommendation: Buy or gift the digital EP from AdamOfficial.com or Amazon THIS WEEK. Albums almost always have their highest sales in the first week, so we only have one shot at this.

TIPS: Do not buy the EP from iTunes if you want to buy the track from iTunes. Do not gift the EP outside of the US if you want it to count for Billboard. Do not buy more than 6 copies as gifts from one account.

Radio Requests Hints

1. Local requests. You should call, e-mail, message or tweet your request to your LOCAL HAC and Pop Station at most 1x per day. Send in a Mediabase Request up to 2x a week.




2. Other requests. If you listen to a distant station online, make sure you include this info and the URL in your request. Spamming and excessive requests or requests from listeners who have no way to listen to the station can have the opposite of the intended result.

3. Be patient. Most radio DJs cannot play a song that is not on the station’s playlist but requests show a PD that there is demand for a song.

4. Niceness counts. Adam fans have a reputation for being polite and courteous to DJs, PDs and station personnel. It matters.

5. SAY THANKS! If stations in your area are already playing "TRESPASSING" let them know that you appreciate them and how much you LOVE the song.
