Worst of the performance was that dry feed which amplified every little bobble and, combined with all the movement, made Adam's voice sound less full than it should. And that's why I hate dry feeds. 8-) I LOVE the AMA's performance . 'Nuff said .

Thanks for the encouragement. I haven't watched it in ages. I remember at the time I was soooo disappointed. But, being the vocal geek, I was disappointed with the singing performance. The choreography, set and otherwise, didn't bother me at all. ABC had been promotoing it as a provocative performance all along. It seemed very much in keeping with the evening. I remember being more "offended" by the female singer semi-wrapped in skimpy bandages sprawled on sort of an operating table with people with guns around her.... something like that. Hazy on the details, but I thought it was creepy. And Gaga breaking liquor bottles and setting her piano ablaze I thought was outrageous and stupid. At least Adam's choreography made sense with the lyrics. But, his vocals just weren't up to snuff. Watching it again, I realize that they weren't nearly as bad as I remembered. Yes, he hit a couple of bum notes, but was mostly on pitch. He did hit a couple of incredible high notes. Overall, his vocals were more wobbly and less consistent than Adam's usual level of professionalism, but compared to many other pop singers, they still sounded good. Worst of the performance was that dry feed which amplified every little bobble and, combined with all the movement, made Adam's voice sound less full than it should. Was it a performance I would recommend to people I want to be wowed with his incredible voice? Nope. Was it bad? Nope. Was it deserving of the shitstorm that errupted? Not even close. Still, I am fine with this being included in his body of recorded work, for its impact on his career. In reviewing it today it struck me that part of the reason he sounded so off was because he seemed to be kind of squeezing the voice. I remember he said his vocal inspiration for this song was MJ and I remember when the song first came out some people said it didn't sound like him or that it was auto tuned and I always felt it was vocal color in that he was singing it the way he imagined MJ would. I really feel like the combination of the unusual vocal color with the lack of control he seemed to be having (probably due to adrenaline) was what made it sound really bad for those of us more familiar with his voice. Of course after the fall everything really went off the rails and I always felt the kiss was an instinctual attempt to create a moment to overshadow the faults. I clearly remember reading plenty of comments online from non fans who thought the vocals were fine. Having listened to a lot of other live performances from other artists in the years since shows that he wasn't that bad in comparison to what unfortunately has become the norm in performance level. I actually thought his vocal got better after the fall! LOL!

[/IMG]
that performance makes me seriously LOL. The outrageousness of it makes me ridiculously happy! At the time I thought the vocals were horrible but 3 years later I realize that they actually weren't that bad comparatively speaking to other performers before or since. I love that he went there. I think it really opened up a lot of different opportunities for him to be who he truly wanted to be instead of being who people expected him to be.

I really love the song FYE! Too bad it didn't get the chance it deserved. I didn't think the performance was bad then or now. I remeber thinking he was trying too hard with the staging and it was all so distracting from the song. I do remember being surprised by it as it was like a different person than we'd seen on AI. But I didn't think much about it one way or another since I wasn't sucked in by his magic yet. I am jealous that you guys followed him for years longer than me, but, oh the treasure trove of pleasure I had waiting for me to discover online once I realized. Probably the best few months ever.
Eta I should add that now I have the same reponse as you frecklesexual-LOL. It is so Adam, but before the general public was ready for it. Even without the "controversial"stuff it would have been controversial. Makes me laugh and cheer now!

I actually thought his vocal got better after the fall! LOL! One thing I feel about that performance , is that Adam is angry . Has he said anything about that ? Or am I seeing things ?? Yes, he did. In one interview, perhaps that great one the LA Times did, he said he may have had Aaron Hinklin on his mind. And the "not gay enough" meme. :twist: He only said that once. Every other time he talks about getting caught up in the outrageousness of the other performances.

Or am I seeing things ?? he has said that perhaps he was "acting out" in response to the letter from the Out Magazine editor who blasted him for not being "gay enough". I know he said the bird flip at the end was to all the people who had been talking shit about him leading up to that performance. I'd say he seemed aggressive more than angry but it works for the song.

Yes, he has said that all the "too gay", "not gay enough" bullshit leading up to that night including the Out Magazine Editor bullshit and the backlash over the Details cover shoot had really built up and he kind of released all of that pent up emotion in to the performance and that the middle finger gesture at the end was definitely directed to Aaron Hicklin from Out Mag.

@coffeesporter: Woohoo. Adam Lambert has surpassed 120 million views on Vevo. And 50 million of those were in 2012!!! That means 42% have been this year! Kind of crazy considering the success of WWF and IIHY compared to the new songs.
