My two cents is that everyone has different things that make them uncomfortable. Talking about what makes you uncomfortable is not a bad thing. But the problem starts when that extends to asking or expecting others to change their behavior to make you more comfortable. Most of us recognize the dangers of "Conformity" in the extremes but many who espouse individuality in theory often fall short in practice. True acceptance comes when we deal with our own discomfort without demanding change in others. That does not mean that we can't work for change. Adam is one of the few people who I see truly models acceptance. I remember well him commenting that getting to know Michael Sarver and Danny Gokey through Idol forced him to face his own judgemental attitude towards Christians. He talked about realizing that he was just as guilty of stereotyping and judging Christians as they were with gays.
Discussions like today's are important but one of the reasons they are difficult is the fact that it is really easy to fall into language that is judgemental and dismissive. All of us, no matter how open minded we think we are will occasionally run in to something that hard to accept. I grew up in South Louisiana and although I've always considered myself very liberal and not prejudiced in any way my daughter called me out on plenty of prejudicial views and statements that I was totally not aware of making. It really made me realize how much we absorb subconsciously. My initial reaction in these situations was defensive at first but I soon realized that she was right. I had a layer of subconscious prejudice that I really had to deal with. It wasn't easy realizing that but it did make me more aware and able to identify when it was happening. Ultimately I was glad that my daughter and I had those arguments but given that she was a teenager at the time it was really hard to realize that she was schooling me.
In the midst of heated discussions even when we are sure we are in the right it is a good idea to pay close attention to the other side of the argument because we just might learn something. Don't let the delivery method blind you to what the message is because it just might be important.

Wait, are we calling people homophobes now? Q3 comment: No we are not. I think I was called bigotry for my comment about Johnny. However, I just want to say people cannot judge someone bigotry from one or few comment or from some post in fansite. Ohh well! Maybe I should just shut up. No need to "shut up". My comment was just meant to reinforce ATop rules -- we do not categorize people or call them homophobes here. The only reason this site exists is for a respectful but mostly free discussion. If we can't talk honestly about how we feel, we can never never never grow as people. We will all just continue to conform and be politically correct.
