I can't believe I am defending Gokey, but... I think his comment was a heartfelt response to the tragedy. He probably truly believes that mention of God in schools and school prayer would bring children closer to the Deity that he holds to be all important to this world. And perhaps provide some measure of protection? Whether I hold the same beliefs, I respect that he is processing this tragedy as best he can, as we all are. Agree with you. This is what a conservative Christian believes and that initial thought is out of love and a desire to protect... As a famous person once said, "They know not what they do" to a great extent. |
