Have any of you been to Bali? How does it differ from Hawaii? I have been to Bali and Hawaii, although it has been a while for both. They are both tourist destinations but there is something more raw about Bali; the standard of general living is not as high as Hawaii. Needless to say, if you are in a four or five star hotel they are very similiar but quality of service I feel is more attentive in the Balinese resort. Weather wise, I think Bali is more humid and also perhaps a little hotter. When I lived in Jakarta, the temperature varied only a little around 90 degrees. The Indian Ocean or Java Sea is one of the most beautiful blues I have ever seen, a very deep blue with a hint of green. Do you remember that blue green color of Suburbans in the early 90s? It always reminded me of the color of the ocean there. I also felt Bali to be very gentle, and the people very serene but that could just be me. Certainly a great deal of expected haggling and persistent offering of goods goes on. Hawaii was in general more familiar and comfortable. I hope some of that makes sense.

Sauli doesn't drive in LA, but still uses taxis and public transportation and walks to get to places. The new home appears to be within walking distance of a lot of things in West Hollywood. So a lot easier for Sauli to get around than the hills. Otherwise we obviously don't know why they switched from a house to a condo; can be a multitude of reasons. Sauli has driven before. He wrote about it in one of his blogs. But, he does seem to prefer to walk. I would guess a condo just fits their lifestyle right now and the fact that they won't have to worry about it when they are gone for long periods of time. Right, I checked a recent blog and he said that he still uses taxis and walks, and doesn't have a car. He didn't specifically say that he does not drive, so he may drive, but doesn't do it regularly. I don't think he has ever said why that is. But I personally hate driving in LA and in big cities in general, and was happy to move to a place where I need to drive only rarely.
