My Sunday Essay about Pop/Rock Music (Ha!)

I am a self-confessed "know-nothing" regarding music of the '80s on. Being an Adam fan has gotten me learning about current music, for sure, but also older music during a time when I quit listening to popular radio. Most of the learning is because of friends here on Atop who know a LOT! I have found out that I don't like a lot of current pop music. This was not a shocking revelation to me, but at least I know something about the music and "artists" now. Some people say music is no good any more, singers can't sing, etc.

I'm writing all this because last night on my long drive home after playing a concert, I listened to the radio the entire way. Usually I listen to CDs. The HAC station that I started listening to in hopes of hearing Adam over the past year, usually bores me to tears after an hour--same old, same old. It turns out that on Saturday nights they playing "retro-pop." So I listened, mostly because "Let's Dance," Bowie was on when I started the car. I only recognized a couple of the songs (and groups) even though they were playing pop hits from summers of the 80s and 90s. I have to say, the songs, in general, were dull, repetitive, not memorable, and pretty much sounded alike. (Hmmm, sounds familiar.) In addition, most of the singing was dull, although there were glimmers of hope on "Funky Town" (only a few phrases out of a song that has little singing in it--yes, I know it is a dance song). 

So what's my point? Just thinking how outstanding Adam is, even if I'm not crazy about some of his songs. Also, I'm struck by how the general public's opinion of what is good singing has changed through the decades. Good singers of my father's generation had a refined quality including vibrato. Then rock changed everything. By the 60's rock/pop singing consisted hitting the notes in tune and other qualities that have often alluded me. Even though I like a certain song, I may not say that the performer is a good singer. Good singers, to me, are people like Adam, Aretha, Diana Ross, Whitney, etc., who have full-bodied voices, vibrato, technical facility, and style. Paul McCartney, great songwriter, icon, amazing, but never has been a singer I'd seek out. This change in popular sentiment about singing has also been on my mind the the "Les Mis" discussion. Some people like the "raw" singing, other do not.

So in closing my Sunday essay, I'd like to sum up by saying that there was plenty of crappy music and mediocre performers in past pop/rock music, and it continues to this day. I don't think I've missed out on all that much greatness by not being very familiar with music of the 80s and 90s. I understand that we tend to like music of our youth (which I was in the 80s), but we also tend to remember that which was actually better than the rest. So next time I read or hear someone bemoan current popular music, I'll just chuckle to myself.
