Really? IMHO this is so easy to decode especially in song like "Broken English" which is about problems in communication between people. Seriously you must know story about Tower of Babel? why must I know the story of the Tower of Babel? When you said this I did a Google search because I thought I must be missing something and honestly I'm more than a little offended that you assume that everyone should automatically know a story from the bible. I've never read the bible, so why should I be expected to know this story? Tell me, am I also expected to know the stories in the Quran or Tanakh? have to jump in here "seriously you must know the story about Tower of babel" seriously what % of the worlds population read the bible?there are not many here in scotland "whisky galore" perhaps but we dimnna read aboot jeesus ,we re pagans ,de ye no ken that!!!

I've never read the bible, so why should I be expected to know this story? Tell me, am I also expected to know the stories in the Quran or Tanakh? The Tower of Babel story is referenced quite often totally outside of it's Biblical origins. There are many things in the bible that people are exposed to through other literature. There are quite a few English Lit academics who argue that the Bible is an important literary work and because of its influence on many other great works of literature deserves to be studied as a literary work outside of its function as a religious text. The same is true of many other religious works. What I'm curious about is the fact that you dismissed the "Tower of Babel" phrase the first time around without bothering to take a minute to google it then. You had no problem making a judgement about the quality of the lyric without first checking to see if you might be missing something. I quess you also missed the discussion of that lyric here when the album came out. While I agree that it is quite possible not to know the phrase I also think it is not unusual for most to assume you would know it even if you hadn't read the Bible.

I'm sorry, I didn't want to offend you - just this is so well known story and I didn't know about it from Bible, but from lessons about poetry. No problem, I will shut up myslelf from now. I probably shouldn't continue this line of thought but.... I had no idea what Tower of Babel meant either. My sigh of exasperation stemmed more from reading (specifically the part in bold) " As for the lyric content, I never understood what "Tower of Babel falling down again" meant.....that reference was completely lost on me so I guess I can see where someone else might think the lyric is superficial if they didn't get what he was referring to." (sorry, can't quite figure out quoting from >1 post.)
O-o-o-kay - so when the critic didn't understand something, he assumed it was superficial. Um. Right. (Reminds herself we're talking about pop music lyrics here) I guess I can just about see how that came about....

Now I'm upset, and I don't understand anymore what I did wrong - for me it's not story from Bible, it's things I've learned in school when we were talking about interpretations in poetry. To this day I didn't know one person who didn't know meaning behind Tower of Bable and I was only suprised not judgemental (sorry my english is stil rough, I'm not that clear as I want to be sometimes). Talking about jumping to conclusions. So thanks for making me feel like some kind of bad person.

Shady with Sam and Nile is the first time I've truly enjoyed it live. Amazing Hiya, bear. I'm way back here on page 2, so I don't know if yours was an unpopular opinion or not. FWIW, I completely agree with you. Shady is a song I happen to like a lot on the album. But until this WAFF performance with Nile, Chic, and Sam, there hasn't been a live performance of the song I've enjoyed very much at all. This performance kicked all kinds of ass.
