The Grammys are a popularity contest. Frank Ocean's album was popular, Trespassing wasn't. Nothing more to say really. FWIW I thought Frank's album was good though. so when Adam's music is nominated for Grammy consideration it will be because it's popular not because it's higher quality than others who are not nominated that year..... Yeah. Quality is subjective, popularity less so.

IMHO - Grammys are rooted in commercialism and behind the scenes politics - as any other awards that have big money riding on the result of it... we are brain washed to see the results as a stamp of quality so we can open our wallets wide and shower the winning product...

Yes, that will definitely be a component. That doesn't mean it won't be good, or that popular albums nominated aren't ever good, or even great, but popularity and timing play a predominant role. There are many good and great albums/artists who are never nominated. My son, a musician, scoffs at the Grammies and laments at how terrible they are. That doesn't mean he doesn't attend the parties, though, and he has often laughed at himself because he knows he certainly would be happy if he ever personally won one.

Quality is subjective, popularity less so. Except Bieber's people would beg to differ on the "Popularity is King" point. It has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of four times more than Frank Ocean's.

Listen to Sam's comment about Adam at 2:00--"...pressure from within the music industry..." I would really like to know what goes on "inside." What pressure, from whom, etc. YES!!! THAT was very telling! It jumped out at me right away; I was even surprised that Sam "went" there.... Adam is a brave soul, sticking to his artistic integrity - that I am sure of!

With the new Grammy rule of not separating the male & female Pop single category, I think any males will have trouble getting nominated. Radio favors the Pop Princesses. I "get" why the Grammy did it. Other genres are not separated by sex. But other genres also don't have the amount of submissions Pop do either.

Eliminating a "VOCAL" category in the singing awards is more than telling. Obviously VOCAL ability is not even a factor any more... thankfully there is still a " Best Classical Vocal Solo" category, I suppose those opera people that "make noise" are supposed to be singing still....
