Imagine my surprise when I heard NCOE playing in the Lamps Plus I shopped in today. I have never noticed music playing in there before. Even hubby looked at me and said "who is this?", knowingly of course. Saw MUSE last night. What an Epic show. Their encore was Starlight. Needless to say I thought of Adam. Still love his version, vocally, more. But the music MUSE puts out in an arena is beyond amazing. And the visuals. I can't imagine what the cost of a production like that is. Talk about lasers. whoah. In fact I would have never even gone to see MUSE if it had not been for Adam. We saw them for the first time in 2010. Hubby said, "this is what Adam needs". The caliber of musicians is what he was referring to. I think of that often. Adam can sing so big. He is such a presence on stage. He is so freaking talented. No diss to the band and the glamily, but really. I think it was very apparent when he performed with Queen. He needs musicians with at least equal ability. At least that is what I would like to see and hear. The studio produced stuff hasn't worked that well for him. Who knows what we will see on album #3?! Both Muse & Queen are bands whose members have been writing and playing music together for 19+ years. That's a lot of time for the band members to gel. Adam's band has only been playing together for a year and they are playing music that they had no part in writing. Big difference! The longer Adam has a consistent band that works together and the more he involves them in the creation process, the better they will sound together. For Adam to have musicians the caliber of Muse or Queen, he would have to become part of a band rather than a solo artist. And he would have to spit the earnings with the band rather than pay them as backup musicians. I agree on the studio produced stuff. Adam's live performances are usually so much better. And I would like to hear more real instrumentation on the studio recordings rather than the computer generated fake instrumentation.

I don't think Adam has 19 years to gel with a band. Are you saying there are not more capable musicians that Adam could work with now? It takes over a decade to get good? I agree he should involve his "band" in the creation process, but four years later I don't think he has a band to involve in the process. I have read here that these are no more than back up musicians that come and go. Actually beside Tommy that has been proven.
If becoming part of a band vs solo artist brings him more overall success it would be worth it, perhaps. Obviously I can't speak for Adam.
I would like the quality of the instrumental music to match the voice of the singer and have that somehow translated to the recording. Too much to ask?

I would like the quality of the instrumental music to match the voice of the singer and have that somehow translated to the recording. Too much to ask? I'm sure Queen & Muse gelled before 19 years. I'm saying that it really isn't fair to compare his current band of backup musicians with bands who have been together for a long time and who wrote the music as a team. Sure there are better musicians Adam could work with now, but they would cost a lot more money and Adam would have problems keeping them for his projects when they could be earning more money touring with bigger names. And I don't think Adam is well enough established, especially in the US, to risk spending the extra money. Plus there are other considerations that can be as important or even more important than having the best musicians available. How the musicians work together as a team and how they relate to Adam is also very important. I think Adam is much happier with the current guitar player than with the previous one even though the previous one was considered by most to be a better player. Queen & Muse record music that consists of recordings of real instruments playing. Current pop music mostly consists of sounds created by a computer. These don't necessarily translate really well to real instrumentation. I think the live music suffers somewhat from being an adaptation of electronically created sounds to the playing of real instruments rather than being music that was created to sound fantastic with live instrumentation in the first place. ETA: And I don't think that there is any way that computer generated sounds will ever be able to produce instrumental sounds that match Adam's voice.

Good points, Dancygeorgia. Does it seem like there might be a bit of a shift going in popular music now? More real instruments. Just thinking about some current acts incorporating instruments, JT comes to mind. Some of the other pop faves I see on TV, ie, Mumford, fun, Bruno Mars. Clicking thru the radio dial in the car still seems to be predominately hip hop/urban in my area. Phoenix radio sucks.
MUSE incorporated a lot of electronic sounds at the show last night. I don't understand the instruments, but both the bass and guitar, during certain songs, had touch pads!
I like the combination of musicians playing traditional instruments with awesome electronic/computer generated sounds.
" And I don't think that there is any way that computer generated sounds will ever be able to produce instrumental sounds that match Adam's voice." YES!!!!!!

I like the combination of musicians playing traditional instruments with awesome electronic/computer generated sounds. " And I don't think that there is any way that computer generated sounds will ever be able to produce instrumental sounds that match Adam's voice." YES!!!!!! JT & Bruno do seem to be shifting to more of a real instrumental sound, even a big band sound, but definitely more horns. On the other hand, Beyonce seems to be shifting away from her tour band that included horns & sax to more rap and more computer generated noises (sorry, I just can't call what we heard yesterday musical sounds). Muse may be incorporating electronic effects to their sound, but the sound is still being driven by real live playing of the instruments. And each person is playing his own instrument in symphony with the other players. On the other hand, instrumentation for studio recorded solo artist pop music tends to be created by the producer on a computer. He can create each instrument's sound separately and combine them together in the music production software. He could even create the horn sounds by playing the notes on a keyboard and the computer software will convert it to the sound of a horn. But no computer will ever be able to exactly reproduce all the nuances of sound produced by someone playing the real instrument. The producer can add to the instrumental layering or take away from it to tweek the instrumentals to exactly what he wants. And he can add sounds that don't sound like any instrument at all. It is not created by a synergy of musicians playing together and feeding off of each other in the way that Adam feeds off of the live instrumentals and the audience. According to the Trespassing CD liner notes, Nile plays guitar on Shady and Tommy added some "additional guitars" (in addition to the computer generated guitar sounds) to Cuckoo. No other instrumental credits are given. From this I would surmise that everything else on Trespassing was computer generated instrumentals created by the producer of that song. Then Adam asked Brian to figure out a way to transform this computer generated instrumentals to something that would sound good on real live instruments. This is really different than the way acts that record as a band create music. ETA: Part of my original point is that the songs that Queen & Muse play were created to be great rock instrumental music combined with great singing, often with the instrumentals being the more important (i.e. all the great guitar solos). On the other hand, the live instrumentals on Adam's music were created to mimic computer generated pop music and to support a great singer. Great instrumental music was not as important as the great singing. I don't think that this type of music lets the instrumentalist shine in the same way that the band created music lets the band members shine. This is another part of why I think the comparison of Adam's backup band to Muse or Queen is not so fair.
