Lots of artists allow their new albums to be streamed on these services -- and they do not sell much or close to what JT did. Being in the Top 10/#1 on streaming services is the result of making broad appeal music, having a huge fanbase and massive promotion. And it, like radio, is in itself promotion. It is a chicken-egg kind of thing. JT's album sold so much in week 1 because he has a lot of fans (his previous solo album sold 4 million in the US, 10 million WW), it was promoted for months prior to sale (they started promo planning in 2010), the promotion was massive including 2 songs debuted Superbowl weekend, S&T in a major ad campaign, Grammy performance and after Grammys concert, SNL, retail promotions with Target and Amazon, a 1-hour TV Special release party sponsored by iheartradio and Target, and his music is all over terrestrial radio and it was streaming +++++
To me the most impressive thing about the S&T debut was that worldwide promo -- and it shows in the total sales. Worldwide the album sold over 580,000 digital copies on iTunes during its first week on sale, becoming the fastest-selling album in the iTunes history for a record's opening week.
It took 2-1/2 years of planning to put this promotion together -- and it shows. Aside from playing on the moon, I am not sure what was missed. But this is not just any artist it is Justin Timberlake.
1998 N' Sync sold 10X Platinum in US (debut album)
2000 N' Sync sold 11X Platinum in US - No Strings Attached
2001 N' Sync sold 5X Platinum in US - Celebrity
Then JT goes solo
2002 Justified - 3X Platinum in the US (debut solo album) WW 7 million
2006 FutureLove/SexSounds - 4X Platinum in the US WW 10 million
2013 20/20 - debut week is essentially 1X Platinum in the US
Very few artists have numbers like this. Very few artists can put together a promotion like this. And the album is a decent album that got good reviews.

There are many theories and discussions about the origins of Easter, and many of them are pro Ishtar. Be that true or not, I think he just seems to always question everything, searching for the truth and more information/meaning usually hidden under many dogmatic veils... which would be the bottom line/point of his tweet. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::~ I was catching up on my pop culture this evening, checking out the Billboard Hot 100 list - oh boy:(((( The first two songs, Thrift Shop and Harlem Shake, made my headphones scream in horror. They jumped out of the window, seeking comfort in smashing against concrete after the five-floor flight down. Justin Timberlake is the only decent thing there for me, since I'm not a fan of Bruno or Pink... not to mention the others. I didn't even bother to check the rest. I did see though that the song Sauli recommended on Twitter this morning is at #29:))) There I smiled and left the page:) Thanks, Sauli, great song!
