5.4.13 Adam in Orlando June 29th!

Vivite, I agree that FYE can be viewed as a more spontaneous or free spirited product, while Trespassing might be seen is more thoughtful or cohesive. Both of these traits are positive ones no doubt, but for my musical tastes, FYE is a little too eclectic. It seems like they grabbed songs from here and there, and the difference in themes and styles is at times jarring. I think a main difference between these albums is that Adam is a writer on the majority of the songs on Trespassing thus giving even songs as divergent as Cuckoo and BE a common underlying core. The ones he didn't write seem to break the flow.

It helps that I am a fan of Adam's lyrics. For example, I love both BO and Aftermath on FYE.
I think one of the reasons I love Trespassing because it is so full of Adam's thoughts and language choices. Autobiographical no doubt, but very genuine.

Really? Nope, cannot say that I see Trespassing as all that heavy. Personal? Sure, what else should Adam write about and still be sincere and emotionally connected, if not about all things personal.  I see him use his personal experience as a springboard, use it as a jump off point for a more general song. Because how would I as listener otherwise be able to relate to his songs, if the reality of my own life is about as far removed from his as can be imagined. Yet, I can relate to his songs or at least his songs give me something to think about.

Adele singing 543 songs about the same relationship drama, that is one never ending personal song - never seen her criticized for that. Taylor swift ditto. But Adam, takes his own experience into a general observation, and somehow that is too close to home?  I find that strange, because you, Viv, are here echoing something that I have heard many others, including the media say, so obviously, there is some perception like that and it is not only you, but I have a hard time making sense out of it.

Now one thing has struck me about Adam's songs and Shady is a good example of that. He starts his songs from a premise of him doing something nasty/shady/wrong  or there being something wrong, almost as a confessional, and then he turns it into something to be proud of, to make a mission of, or at least to be happy and sing about. Obviously, the parallel to his bigger life context is evident.

All these others that I mentioned singing about personal stuff, do the opposite. They are saying: I am ok, but I was wronged (by the boyfriend, by the world, whatever). Adele does not tell us what she did wrong to make that relationship break apart and as with anything, I bet there were two sides to that story too. But that is personal and private. Shouting out her hurt, that is ok in a song, that is not too personal.

Yet, if Adam would do the same, blame the world for wronging him, for example, I don't think he would find favors with anybody. He would be told not to cry and whine. Strange how that works. Not that I think that Adam ever were interested in writing such a song, but just the premise of it makes it clear that it would not work.

But I do think that Adam could write songs that start with the premise of his strengths, rather than his perceived weaknesses.

Because, if you go through it, TSP has quite a bit of that: drinking too much or trespassing social bounderies or seeking sex in shady places or turning bi-polar or cuckoo and staying in unhealthy relationships.

And perhaps I have just answered my own question, why some folks think of the album as too personal or heavy. I never til now seen it that way, because Adam always writes about overcoming that challenge, rather than being stuck in it. But perhaps it would be good to not do that, but rather start from a position of strength for a change. Adam has so many strengths - perhaps somebody can reach out and give him this understanding of 'I am ok', that needs to be there both to fight depression as well as find a voice of strength.

So, I have just committed Adam to some therapy or something, with this post, which is the opposite of how I started it. So I am going to step away and think about this some more.

vivlite - yes, yes yes! My Imaginary timeline was a bit closer to 10years and by then he wouldn't care about TPTB and perceive it more as an advert ...

Until then I imagine a whole lot of Albums!!! I didn't mean immedeately 007. right now I want A3!!!!!
