Jennifer Hudson Signs On as American Idol Judge! (Plus, Find Out Who Else Is Close to Coming Aboard)

American Idol has nailed down its first alum turned judge: Jennifer Hudson.

Multiple sources confirm exclusively to E! News that the Oscar-winning singer has signed a deal to sit at the judges' table this fall for season 13. The other two spots are also intended for former Idol contestants: Kelly Clarkson and either Adam Lambert or Clay Aiken.

We're told that Clarkson is also close to signing on. No word yet on whether Lambert or Aiken will fill the final spot, but producers are expected to keep the panel to three members.

The "superstar-alum" theme is aimed at reclaiming some of Idol's lost viewership—the series is down about 10 million viewers from two years ago, in part because of the success of The Voice.

Fox (smartly) wants to highlight Idol's upper hand: It's the only singing competition to actually manufacture top-selling stars.

"It's Idol alums bringing in the next generation," says one Fox source of the reasoning behind the casting for season 13.

Current judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Keith Urban will not be returning.

Hudson didn't win the show's third season but went on to have one of the most high-profile careers, winning an Academy Award in 2006 for Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls. She most recently appeared on the second season of NBC's troubled and now-canceled series Smash.

Fox had no comment on Hudson's casting.

There will be a livestream and the Austrian TV ORF1 will start their broadcast at 20:15 CET. The RC will start at 21:00 CET and the part where Adam will sing his song will be at 21:30 CET.

Here is also posted that Adam is supposed to fly to Vienna with a special LifeBall plane. He will arrive then at 10 am CET on Friday. There might be a RC for when the guests will get out, but I haven't seen any information about it exactly. I just assume and hope

There will be also a press conference on Saturday at 11:00 am CET with international stars, so I assume and hope again Adam will be there. I haven't found yet a stream or a lifeticker to that conference. There was one back when they announced that Adam will sing the song though.

Would An All-Stars Idol Judging Panel Save American Idol?

It’s purely speculative at this moment, but how friggin’ awesome would it be if this actually came to fruition. According to Vulture.com, American Idol execs are contemplating replacing at least one, if not all the judges, with former contestants. The site claims that both Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson have been approached while Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert are also rumored to be in the running.

In my dream world, a Clarkson-Hudson-Lambert trifecta would be EVERYTHING. Not only do they all have successful post-Idol careers but each would bring something different to the table. Kelly would be the nurturing down-to-earth motherly one, while Jennifer would be Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj combined- divalicious and sassy. Need I say what Adam would bring- glamor and pure gayness. In addition, each had a different journey on the show. We have a winner, runner-up and someone who was eliminated way before their time.

FOX needs to make this happen. This could be the direction needed to save the show. Clearly high-priced talent hasn’t done the trick. The show’s massive ratings decline this season resulted in FOX losing the 2012-2013 TV season in the coveted 18-49 demo to CBS for the first time in eight years.


In other Idol-related news, for the first time ever, the show is allowing former semifinalists to re-apply for the show. Previously, if a contestant made the Top 24 or the live voting rounds, they would be ineligible to return. Not anymore. With that being said, if they’re over the maximum age limit like Season 12′s Tenna Torres or Vincent Powell, they’re still S.O.L.*

'American Idol': Kelly Clarkson Will Not Judge Season 13

Despite rampant rumors, a rep for Kelly Clarkson tells The Hollywood Reporter that the American Idol winner will not be judging season 13 of the Fox show.

It was reported by New York Magazine's Vulture blog on Wednesday that series producers are considering an all alumnae panel for next year's competition, after seeing a double digit drop in viewership for season 12, which was judged by expensive music celebrities Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, in addition to Randy Jackson and Keith Urban. E! later reported that a three-judge table made up of alums is “95% there" and featured images of Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson.

The stories did not address comments made by country star Urban, who told reporters at the season 12 finale that he would love to return next year. Speaking to THR on the red carpet, season eight runner-up Adam Lambert also said he'd be thrilled to join the panel. He later commented, "Where do I sign?"
But according to a source, Lambert's representatives have not yet heard from Idol brass regarding a possible place on the panel. Another insider tells THR the producers' first choice is to bring Jennifer Lopez back and that will.i.am, a frequent Idol guest, both as performer and mentor, is also high on the list. However, a source close to will.i.am says it's "doubtful" the rapper-producer turned solo artist would be able to honor Idol's time commitment.

One thing that's certain: speculation as to who might fill the four (or three) seats will continue well into the summer, but typically, these decisions are not made until the show and its various partners come together on pressing matters of format changes and possibly new executive producers.


10 ‘Idol’ Contestants Who’d Make Great ‘Idol’ Judges

Rumors circulated this week that Fox honchos, desperate to retool and salvage "American Idol" after a disastrous 12th season, are considering replacing the entire judging panel with "Idol" alums. Such a strategy may seem a little too self-referential, a little too retroactive, and definitely gimmicky, but you know…it just might work.

Hiring Idols as judges would serve two important purposes: It would bring back nostalgic viewers who probably stopped tuning in after Simon Cowell left (and certainly after Nicki Minaj signed on), and it would drum home the point that "Idol" is the only singing show on U.S. television that has consistently churned out actual pop stars. Would "The X Factor" ever cast Melanie Amaro or Tate Stevens as a judge? Would "The Voice's" panel ever include Javier Colon or Jermaine Paul? I rest my case.

After more than a decade, "Idol" has certainly launched the careers of enough people with the credentials (and TV-tested personalities) to fill "Idol's" presumably four vacant chairs. Here are my picks for some past contestants who should be in the casting mix:

Adam Lambert – Adam's name is reportedly on "Idol's" shortlist (and was supposedly in the running last year), and with good reason: The man is great television. Seriously, was "Idol" ever as exciting again once Adam's season was over? He's funny, he's smart, and he's not afraid to be candid (maybe even too candid). Yet he's still likable, he's got great taste in music, he can sang, and he's got a flamboyant fashion sense that could make even Mariah Carey look plain. And according to recent interviews, he's ready to sign on the dotted line. What are you waiting for, Fox?
