The Exxon board had argued that the company already banned discrimination of any type and did not need to add language regarding gays.
The vote, rejected by shareholders by a 4-to-1 ratio, was a repeat. The measure was first up for a vote in 1999, and it has been on the agenda for 14 consecutive years.
The ban was proposed by a retirement fund for employees of New York State. George Wong, an official for the New York comptroller’s office, said the lack of specific protection for gays hurt the company’s ability to recruit employees from the widest pool of talent.
Mr. Wong said Exxon discriminates by refusing to extend spousal benefits to employees who marry a gay partner in New York, where same-sex marriage is legal."The bottom line is that Exxon Mobil refuses to recognize gay marriages even in the states in which gay marriage is legal. They cite DOMA, saying that since gay marriage is not recognized at the federal level, they don't have to extend spousal benefits to any spouses of gay employees. Yikes! I'm having a very unusual visceral reaction to the latest incarnation of Melvin. Ack!! I hate it! At least the mustache part! WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME?!?!? (Deep breathes. I'm sure everything will be fine in a few days...)
