The stars of music and screen have spoken out about their joy that the United States Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) on Wednesday.

The law denied federal benefits to married homosexual couples.

California’s Proposition 8, which had put a ban on gay marriage, was also deemed unlawful.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who has been married to actress Portia de Rossi since 2008, but the union was later invalidated by the California Supreme Court, spoke out at how overjoyed she was at the decision.

"It's a supremely wonderful day for equality," she tweeted on Wednesday. "Prop 8 is over, and so is DOMA. Congratulations everyone. And I mean everyone."
