I have seen this on a few times on Queen sites, but IWTBF was not going to get played in the US and I believe that is why Capitol decided not to invest in the song. Oh there was definitely more than one factor. I do agree that I Want To Break Free's video was one of those factors but the Capitol thing was the biggest imo. That was the first nail. The fact is that Queen decided to capitalize on the popularity of AOBTD and make a more dance influenced album. It also didn't help that Paul Prenter (Freddie's asst manager) really was influencing Freddie at this point. Freddie's group was hitting all the big gay discos at the time and Paul wanted Freddie to write stuff that would be played at the clubs they hung out in and Freddie was into it at the time. Freddie looked at it as eh it's just a bloody album, it doesn't mean we're not rock and roll anymore to do an off kilter album. Unfortunately the fan base was not happy. Well therein lies the rub. The Works was a conscious effort by Queen to regain it's fanbase. It really is when it comes down to it a Queen Paint By Numbers. You have Tear It Up which is an homage to WWRY, you have It's A Hard Life which is a child of Somebody To Love and Play The Game, you have Is This The World We Created written specifically because they were missing a Love Of My Life type of song, Hammer To Fall was the rocker in the vein of TYMD, Man On The Prowl was another 50s pastiche ala Crazy Little Thing. And it kind of worked. At the time it was a "return to glory" and Radio Ga Ga debuted at 16 and then wasn't played at all. The decision to followup with IWTBF with the British humor certainly didn't help. I agree there to a point. There was talk of a the works tour hitting America but Freddie nixed it because he wanted to tour a big hit so he was trying to get a hit then tour...but unfortunately in America it's the other way around, sometimes a tour will make the hit.... Oh Brian agrees to...he also discusses Paul Prenter and he was quoted on the Capitol no pay-no play stand as well. There was PLENTY of reasons in a sort of perfect storm. But what gets me is that Queen hits Live Aid. And even in America it was huge and they were the best band of the day. But yet, it did little on the charts. That's more where the pay to play bit comes in a bit more to keep them off. It wasn't really til I Want It All that rock stations started playing them a bit again and even than it was sparingly until Bo Rhap kind of forced their hands during it's revival. Also a bit later on in a Coca Cola's (ill fated) C2 campaign (the pre Coke Zero Coke Zero)!

Here is a direct link to LMD on iTunes: a1439.phobos.apple.com/us/r30/Music4/v4/b1/6b/31/b16b3165-0032-5c4d-f863-2c3fdf2695c3/mzaf_7116458999481808306.plus.aac.p.m4aETA: Talon -- thanks for the reply. The music business is not rational but Queen in the US is at the extreme edge of what seems probable. But there was so much good music in the late 70's early 80's that many great songs and albums had modest sales. And the US and the UK often had different musical tastes... Space Oddity (Bowie 1969) #1 UK, #15 US The Jean Genie (Bowie 1972) #2 UK, #71 US Fame (Bowie 1975) #16 UK, #1 US Under Pressure (Queen/Bowie 1981) #1 UK, #29 US [Never understood this not being higher on the US charts.]
