6 Reasons to Get Pumped About the New Season of Glee

Despite the show's title, it's a little tough to feel happy and excited about Glee this season. Following the sudden death of Cory Monteith this past July, many of the headlines about the series have been about the death of his character, beloved quarterback and New Directions member-turned-substitute director Finn Hudson, and how the series will move forward without one of its most important characters. For Gleeks across the country and around the world, the thought of watching Glee without Finn is a sad one. However, like any good musical, the show must go on, especially when that show is known for delivering heart, humor and those feel-good moments. Glee returns for its fifth season Thursday (9/8c, Fox), and although there's something missing from the new season, there are plenty of other reasons to tune in for Season 5:

5. New guest stars! Glee will be getting visits from not one, but two famous faces this fall when Demi Lovato and Adam Lambert guest-star. Lovato, who is pulling double duty on Glee and X Factor, will be playing a new friend of Rachel and a possible new love interest for Santana (Naya Rivera). After seeing Santana spend a good chunk of last season pining for Brittany (Heather Morris) — while Brittany was dating Santana's ex nonetheless — we're excited to see her move on. If Lovato's character is half as feisty as Lovato is on The X Factor, she'll be the perfect pairing for the passionate Lima Heights Adjacent native. Although far less is known about who Lambert will be playing, it's nice to see the American Idol runner-up pop up four years after co-creator Ryan Murphy first mentioned him as a possible guest star. His killer voice and impressive theatrics throughout his run on Idol in Season 8 prove he's a great fit for the over-the-top series.

Avicii Stays True
Say what you will about Avicii's countronica mash-up hit single "Wake Me Up," but the Swedish DJ is clearly doing something right. His debut major label album, True, which features cameos from Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds, Adam Lambert, Nile Rodgers and country singer Mac Davis, landed at #5 after moving just under 50,000 units.

This week’s Top 7 digital sales singles are all by women!
Lorde was up 17 percent to 307,000 for #1, close on her heels was the former #1, Katy Perry's "Roar," which slipped 10 percent as it held at #2 (301,000) in a virtual tie with Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball," down 37 percent to 301,000. Perry is on a roll, as her new single, "Dark Horse," came in at #4 on sales of 194,000 and Britney Spears was just outside the top 5 with a #6 debut for "Work Bitch!" (174,000). Rounding out the woman wave was Lady Gaga's "Applause" at #7 (160,000).

No one is born a star. Even if someone is born with a killer voice, they still have to toil away for years. They’ve got to hone their chops and await their big break. Thankfully, obscurity doesn’t mean the same thing as invisibility. The 10 stars on our list all have early moments caught online that they might not want us to see now.

Nevertheless, we think it’s important to remember that Lady Gaga used to perform at New York open mics in simple cotton dresses, or that Kanye West once toiled in the studio trying to impress Jay-Z, or that Ed Sheeran gleefully stuffed marshmallows into his mouth for no good reason at all.

1. Lady Gaga

Whether or not you think what she does is art, one thing’s for sure: Lady Gaga, aka Stefani Germanotta, works her buns off in the name of pop music.

Even before she was steaming up the stage as Lady Gaga, she was hitting open mics all over New York City performing her songs and perfecting her sound. Many of Gaga’s early performances have been shared, but this performance of “Fever” in 2006 might be the most noteworthy if only because years later the song became an Adam Lambert single. Check out Adam’s performance of it in 2010 and note the differences:
